Why is it difficult to recommend the proper tool for the task at hand?:confused::confused::confused:

Difficult because how you'd do the repair, may not be the members best course of action. Then you'd have to recommend that he look for a $500 holecutter kit (at an auction fifteen years ago). Also by the time a guy has those specialty tools, people are asking THEM how to fix stuff, not going on forums for suggestions.

I don't make up the rules, I just calls it as I sees fit.;)

Agreed sometimes you have to buy tools. For example if he has no large diameter cutoff disc it's only $7. Recommending a cutoff disc would be a suitable recommendation. However cutting a 2" deep slot in 1" thick steel lug is kinda iffy for a first-timer. But it is a 15 minute job to cut that lug off with a grinder. And perhaps about 5-10 minutes more to vee it out for welding.

Of course whenever people buy specialty tools for one-time use then I always hope I'll hear of it it for sale on craigslist for a fraction of its value.

Well that's new:confused:! I thought you were a self appointed moderator.

oops you forgot something.

Looks like you got your understanding adjusted to fit your purpose. If I was a moderator I'd simply delete silly stuff like this. Specialty tools are fun to see but are rarely usable by members who have a problem to solve because they don't have that specialty tool. I like to see them, but I don't suggest it as a viable option.

Well anyway, some ways to fix the hole have been suggested, will be interesting what the OP chooses. He didn't mention what tools he has access to but an angle grinder and a welder can take care of that.

Ever since you joined this forum, you have been informing me that the welding section of this site is a tractor sub forum. You believe you're some kind of welding expert:rolleyes: because you can pull a trigger on a Mig welder. Trust me you have no idea what it takes to make a living as a welder!
Just here recently you said I give "half advice, leaving a big hole in what newbie members could have learned from the example".
Here refresh your memory, read post #9. Then tell us you don't think you are a moderator here!

BTW last time I checked, it was a tractor sub-forum.
