Oil & Fuel Home heating oil = Diesel?

I would use heating oil without reservation.
I have used nothing in my BX 22 (3 years now) except heating oil.

LBrown - strictly cost, less tax on the heating oil, approximately $.75/gallon here in NY. That said, I burn #2 in my furnace and truck stop diesel in my Kubotas. It's always fresh and mixed for the season. I use less than 10 gallons a month, if I was doing any serious ag work I'd install a tank and have off-road diesel delivered.

My Landmark dealer sells Diesel X4 51 octane (with red dye) that is cheaper (less taxes) and they claim to be better for tractors than their normal "on the road" diesel. I was told the dye is used so that truckers can be discovered using it (to save taxes). I'm using "on the road" diesel right now and it's been fine.

Better check that Diesel X4 51 octane label. Diesel has a Cetane number not an Octane number. Octane is for Gasoline.

Home heating oil and off road diesel are the same exact thing in CT. Probably the same product everywhere. #2 fuel oil is what we burn here. #1 or kerosene if you have an outside tank. From what I'm told on road diesel is a differant product. As of two weeks ago Pump Diesel was $2.88 per gallon. Home heating oil $ 2.18 per gallon no tax on heating fuel.You do the math. Off road diesel is taxed at 6% plus some other state tax per gallon in CT. So just make sure you tell them your heating with it. LBROWN we heat with #2 fuel oil in New England. No matter how cold it is.

2*Is heating oil dyed red like the off road diesel is?

No tax on heating fuel. You do the math. Off road diesel is taxed at 6% plus some other state tax per gallon in CT.

Some would call it a gimmick, others would call it marketing savvy. Here in NE no 2 diesel and no 2 heating oil = same thing. What's the difference???? How come the water I drink comes out of the ground from my spring, costs nothing, tastes great, and yet I can go to the super market and get a bottle of "spring water", Evian or whatever, and pay a dollar a pint for it.? Is it the same thing??? A microspectrographic chemical analysis might say different, but it's water, Both taste great. Then I can get a glass of city water, and it's water, but it tastes different because of the Chlorine.
Point is, marketing is big nowadays

Last time I bought heating oil, it costs more per gal. than taxed diesel at the pump. I sometimes get "untaxed" offroad diesel which is about 30 cents/gall cheaper, but it's a little further drive to get. I sometimes put diesel in my heating oil tank as it is sometimes cheaper.

LBROWN59, No gimmik, you pay state sales tax on off road diesel. You do not pay sales tax on home heating fuel as long as its used for heating. Thats the only differance in price. Diesel from your local gas station has state and federal highway tax added plus sales tax plus mark up at your local Mobil.
