Homemade Subsoiler

Here's my subsoiler I made. I really wanted one with a shear bolt, it seemed that prices we're outrageous around here. So here's my first one I built, but as you see, it didn't hold up to well, but then I made a second, I used an anhydrous knife attached to an old plow edge. Put over an hour of work on it. Using a grade 5 shear bolt, as I hit a large rock and worked perfect. Now I just need to attach a pipe to the back and start laying pipe!

Nice job ... How deep were you plowing with it? I never really thought of using a sheer bolt (I have been meaning to build one to bury wire). I guess I just expected the tractor to come to a dead stop and it wouldn't have been an issue ...

I cannot tell how big the tractor is that you are using but with the size of the car wheel in the background of one of the pics, I am sure it has a lot more ponies than my hydrostatic 24 hp beast!

Thank you, in the hard packed ground I was going about 9-11 inches deep, in softer ground it was going 18-20 inches. I'm using a Bobcat CT235 with R-4 tires with a bucket of dirt in front. BTW that's my little ford ranger in the background. Great for errands 34mpg vs my Chevy duramax at 14mpg

single leg subsoilers and shearbolts... We have a field that has ore banks in it. Once we borrowed neighbours ripper, pulled with with two tractors, wondered why it started to pull so easy. At the end of the field, the chisel was off the leg

Later we had our own single leg ripper, it broke the shearbolts before it was at depth. We used 12.9 quality shearbolts, and welded all around the leg, then sold it to a farmer with fields without ore banks and a smaller tractor...

The other neighbour bought a thing that worked on our soil:

I went through a similar process with my subsoiler... Build, break, re-design, etc. I finally built it strong enough that it will stop the tractor before it will break. I use it a lot now. Every spring I have a dozen or so gardens that I loosen up with the subsoiler before I till.

Was doing really great today for almost an hour. First two photos show how deep it was. Then it raised. Later it was making the tractor just spin out. Well got a little carried away and little too fast and snapped the cutting edge. Back to the drawing board!

I presume that was a box blade type shank you broke.

With that in mind, I wonder if pulling on the bolt holes gives you only 1/2 the strength of the shank to do the work.

The shank adapter I built supports the whole shank above and below the bolt holes. The bolt hole only controls the length of the shank available to go into the ground.......

It was a anhydrous knife welded to a plow cutting edge. Everything held well, I think when I torched the bolts off the cutting edge I weakened it, it really surprised me. I found a used shear bolt subsoiler at a local auction coming up Saturday, so I may buy that, if not I'm going to go build another.
