How bad is it to store tractor outside?

The steering wheel was the only bad point for water entry. It would enter under a plastic cap and flow down the steering shafts key way. This in turn caused the steering box to freeze in the winter. Silicone was placed on top of the center of the steering wheel {nut and washer}. Plastic cover replaced. Tractor outside in Ohio weather since 1982. Barn would be better but county said no! And you thought this was America.

So glad I live in Texas, and have a semblance of freedom left...

I keep mine in a cheap HF tarp building, with a tarp floor, and one end open. I find that it keeps the rain off and out of the fuel. I also laid down some 2X6's on top of the hold downs and park the tractor on top to help keep the thing from blowing away. Keeps the rain off, witch we get a lot of here in the PNW and also keeps the sun (what is that) off the tires.

Always kind of amazes me that guys who wouldn't let a $40 ratchet wrench lay out in the rain leave their $25,000 tools out. :confused2:

Anyhow, agree with the others. Between the dust and dirt, sun fading and eating it up, weather rusting and rotting, it ages modern equipment something fierce. The paint can't take it, and neither can the plastics, vinyl, rubber and so forth.

I have to pose this question.
What about your vehicles? Do they sit outside? Ever?
My tractor was over 30 years old when I bought it and for the most it has been outside. Not that I wouldn't like to keep it under cover, but right now I just haven't spent the money to build a barn. Both my truck and car sit outside all the time as well.

I do have one thing that has only been outside a couple of nights. Thats the Cub Cadet I bought new back in '89. I dont wax or wash it, but it just doesn't sit outside. The again it's small enough to fit in the little utility shed I have.

Mine sleeps in one end of the hay shed, works out perfectly. Keeps it dry and out of the sun.

My trucks spend their whole life outside. HOWEVER, they are not convertibles and cockpit and controls are sealed from the weather. The paint is a whole different beast too - my Tundra is 10 years old, full of dents, and has only been washed 2-3 times in it's whole life, but the paint still looks like new.

I don't think I'd store my '65 Shelby AC Cobra with open cockpit outside in the weather.

(No, I don't really have one - just making the point.)

I read a recent article in the WSJ. 1 in 12 people in the US live in Texas. Much of the attraction is the attitude you expressed. Sounds like a compelling place to be. However, I'm shocked to see how cold it can get down there.

We used to sell Ag & Construction equipment where I work. It's amazing how quickly machinery ages if left out in the elements. MF had a problem with the first generation of plastic fenders on the small GC's. They turned pink after a few months of sunshine. As much as I can I store my attachments under cover. I know they are metal and will outlast me. But, I spent good money on them and like to keep them looking good.
