How best to kill one thing growing right next to another?

Cut it and paint the stump with 2-4-D mixed in diesel. It’s unlikely that trees of a different genus would have root grafts. But if the willow is a root sprout from another willow tree, you will kill them both.
A forester friend of mine used to carry a dawn dishwashing liquid bottle filled with 2-4-D and a little bit of dawn. He'd cut a stump and squirt the cut edges with the stuff. If anything came back the next year, he'd cut that and reapply. Seemed to work pretty well.

@ning If the willows keep spreading, have you thought of putting down a single ripper blade, ripping the soil to make a thin trench, and then putting in a barrier material?

All the best,

Peter

I think 2,4-D requires paperwork here, but

It's a good idea... unfortunately it's in a spot with no tractor access... and underground water.

Thank you all for the input, I'm going to think on this a bit and after the atmospheric river go cut some willow. Whether I paint it after or not is the question still ;)

OMG
Just put a trash can over the fig tree and spray the willow with a round up for brush.

Next thing you know someone’s gonna suggest you get a permit from the Coast Guard.

Keep in mind that herbicides only work well when the plant is actively growing. If the willow is dormant and has lost the leaves, it’s best to use herbicides during the next growing season.

I do that also but I add glyphosate to 2,4d and soap.
