Are you guys crying over spilt milk?

Oh I just couldn't resist.

But really if this is your biggest complaint in life, you know your doing pretty good.

Happy new year!!

Those are a challenge at first - esp when full. Not hard when you get the hang of it tho.

retrofit caps in the works ...e.g., squarejug.com ...more and better sure to come ...perhaps a bit of a worry about sterilization of cap, I would think

Take the cap off, then read the directions on the bottom of the jug.

Yes, we have ran across the square ones as well. Looks like a saltine cracker box with no pour spout, and no handle. I believe the Mrs. said this new style comes from Costco.

Our grandson is a heavy drinker, but uses a little sippy cup. I make a mess of it until the jug is half empty. I suppose there is a trick to pouring, but I haven't found it yet. Not the end of the world...pouches sound even worse!

I saw some at Sam's that were different than these, but still were stackable. The tops of the first run nestled into the bottom of the second run, ect. (Kind of like Lego blocks but not an actual tight fit.) The cap was still in the center, where it belongs.

When I first saw the title I was thinking:

1) 6 is winding us up, or has had too many holiday egg-nogs.... (haven't seen those in Canada, yet).

then....

2) This is real ! Sounds like something the EPA has mandated !

followed by....

3) Given the frustration level, I won't be totally surprised to see a TBN'er punch out and add a tire valve breather to these things !

Often the little things can appear to be more irritating than real crises.... here's hoping that nobody has to deal with anything more significant than spilled milk in 2014.

Happy New Year..... Rgds, D.

Some background on pouches for you.

My dad was pres of the Quebec dairy council in the '70's and as such responsible for introducing the liter bags.
Back then the gal jugs were washed and refilled and he noticed that folks used the jugs to carry everything from gasoline to water (or worse) and would then later be refilled with milk.
Being plastic proper sanitation was not possible as most sanitation systems used steam processes which would melt the plastic jugs.
A voting process amongst the dairy producers of Quebec resulted in the unanimous approval of the liter baggies.

The milk carton with the 'pop out' pour spout also originated in our household.
In fact I created the first samples on mother's sewing machine using it to make the perforated tear lines. Back then milk cartons were stapled at the top and wax dipped while today's versions are a plasticized paper board.

Dad worked his entire life in the packaging industry and was highly respected for his devotion and integrity.

Considering the equipment investment any change in packaging incurs, I suspect there are economic reasons for the milk industry to go to the new jugs. Perhaps, instead of the jugs moving around the filling equipment in single file, maybe they move in groups with multiple jugs being filled simultaneously. That would give a hug savings and raise efficiency of the packaging facility. Also, the caps on the new bottles look like they are screw-on instead of the current snap-on lids with the tear-off retainer ring.

As mentioned previously, I believe the main reason is that you can ship, store and display more milk (or anything else) in less space, which ultimately results in a cost savings. I recall seeing a documentary on Cosco recently in which it was mentioned that their CEO came up with this idea.
