How do you store your diesel?

I have a 275g tank. It is on an earthquake stand and I have a Tuthil 115v pump on it, with a 2-stage filter (water->Xmicron). I get a biodiesel blend from a local commercial supplier. They come out whenever I call them. I do try to run it down as close to empty as I can.

Running a biodiesel blend, you want to run through it within 6 months. I have 2 diesel tractors, a diesel F350 and my commute car is also diesel (VW Jetta GLS TDI wagon), so running the tank down in that time frame is not an issue.

I used to use the Blitz/Gerry cans. I hated having to lift them over my head to fill the JD2355 and the fill location on the open station JD3720 really sucks. Having your own fuel station is close to nirvana!

Well, I've been investigating getting a large diesel fuel transfer tank, but I've decided to consider a different and less expensive way to go with this.

Right now, I use a 29 gallon Tempo Gas Walker with a hand pump to buy the diesel and transport it back to my place. I've attached images of it.

I got to thinking about what I didn't like about this set up to see how I might improve it without ditching the whole thing and going to a big tank. The first thing is I'm tired of all the hand cranking. The second is that it's a pain to load the tank unto a trailer and strap it down down for transporting to re-fuel. Tempo recommended that I take the pump off, replace the bung plug, and transport it horizontally. That was more trouble than I was willing to put up with. I have a trailer with 3 ft high metal sides, so I just strap it down and transport it in a vertical position so that I don't have to remove the hand pump.

It occurred to me that if I removed the hand pump permanently, then connected a small electric pump between the valve and the hose that you see at the bottom of the tank in the photos (normally used to gravity feed), then I could eliminate the hand cranking. And since I wouldn't have to disassemble the hand pump every time I transported the tank, I could just load it horizontal unto the trailer when it came time to refuel and it would be much easier to secure the tank in the horizontal position. I still have to make the half hour trip to fuel, but I guess I can deal with that. And I would be using fresher fuel.

Here's a Tuthill Pump I found at Northern Tool. It looks like I could put a 90 out of the valve and mount this pump in line to the hose and nozzle. Everything is 3/4".

What do you all think about this solution? Any downside?

How many of you guys posting in this thread heat your home with home heating oil or fuel oil?

We use our woodstove exclusively, ie no home heating oil or fuel oil.

Rolando, you could just leave the 28 gallon Tempo Gas Walker at home and purchase 4 or 5 five Gallon Blitz plastic diesel fuel dispensers to transport your fuel from the fueling station back to home. Install the electric pump to replace the hand pump and leave it like that?

How much diesel fuel do you normally use each month anyways?

More than 30 gallons?

No, it's less than 30. The main reason I was considering a storage tank was to save the trips to re-fuel and also save by being able to pay the off-road price. but the math just doesn't work. At a savings of just 60「 or so per gallon and the rate I use it, it would take me years to recoup the cost of the tank.

The 5 gallon cans are too much trouble. They have those fancy push to flow spouts and they take forever to empty. The cans don't have a separate air intake, so I can't just replace the spout with something simpler.

1*Why not have the fuel delivered instead of going after it.
I have 2 suppliers that will top off my 30 gallon tank whenever they're in my area,
2*Forget the tank for the moment; It's not the problem but the solution is in how you plumb the pump.
3*It's an even bigger pain to unload it off of a truck or trailer.
4*But then you'd have to cart the elect pump fuel filter and hose with the tank when you go to get fuel.
This is why I didn't mount my pump on the tank.
5*Plumb this pump up the right way and it resolves all your issues.
I would not mount the pump to that valve because that attaches the pump to the tank.

1*6 cans at $5 each is 30 bucks.
I bought a 30 gallon drum for $12.
and the fuel supplier gave me a 55 gallon drum for free when I went to get fuel the other day.
They put 30 gallons of the red stuff in the 55 Gal. drum.
I hauled it home and pumped the fuel out of it (using the set up pump) into the 30 gallon set up drum and set the empty drum off the truck.
All Done No Sweat!
There is an add in the paper here selling 55 gallon drums for 15 dollars each.
2*All Rolando needs is a 30 or 55 gallon drum to go with his tank then plumb up the pump with the propper fittings and a fuel filter and he's in business.

1*you don't have to have a large tank or buy large volumes to get off road.
2*how much for the tank? /how many gallons?
3*This is no problem for my set up.
4*I can. I just take the spout off the can and stick the extra suction hose on my pump in the can and pump the fuel into the 30 gallon storage drum.
