How do you talk to an XR4140?

I got it from eBay out of China. It's called Kess and Ktag and you probably shouldn't think of it as a diagnostic tool. It does have some diagnostic features but this system is mainly used for extracting and re-mapping (flashing) the chips in ECUs. I would strongly encourage you to do your own research and decide if you think it will work for what you have and do what you want. As far as hardware goes, it comes with every interface board and cable and jumper and pin and whatever needed to interface with any ECU on the market, from motorcycles to boats to dozers to minivans, but software support has to be written for each vehicle. I arrived at the conclusion that this system would work after extensive research and lengthy reading on Russian/Chinese ECU hacking forums. There is no software support explicitly for the LS XR tractor that I could find evidence of, but they do have the Case IH Farmall 40C in the database, which should be the exact same as my LS XR4140. Same engine, same ECU, same tractor, different color. So in my mind it was a relatively safe gamble. I haven't tested it yet. I just unboxed it to take the picture. I will update this thread once I do.

If you want the legit interface that LS uses, it's called Carnics UVIM. I can only find that for sale from a single seller on Alibaba out of Korea, who has not replied to any of my messages and seems to have not logged in in months. Maybe he was "offed" by the Korean mafia at the behest of LS. And even if he were reachable, the listing does not include software. I cannot find the software anywhere. It's available for download at the LS Korea website if you have dealer login credentials but I don't. Since the Case IH tractor is the same and the New Holland Boomer 40 is the same, either of those softwares should work (I assume) but those are equally well guarded, albeit with more interest and more avenues to acquire them. The pirated New Holland software is available on eBay but I refuse to purchase it and I recommend the same.

That explains your success-I must have misread your original post and thought this device was roughly equivalent to the diagnostic tool called out in the SM.

I reached out (via Alibaba) trying to source the diagnostic tool and had much the same experience. Like you not interested in pirated software. Hopefully somebody will come up with a source for the OEM tool at some point- really would like access to the OEM specific diagnostic codes.

I am watching this thread with very closely. Strantor, please keep us updated. As stated before, the only difference between the XR4145 and XR4155 is the coding in the ECU. It would be awesome to get more HP outta my 45hp by just flashing the ECU! Probably gotta wait a few years for the warranty, but if we get the ducks in rows before then...

The OEM-specific diagnostic codes are spelled out in the service manual (PM me if you don't already have that) and you should still be able to at least read the DTC number via a cheap dongle with the Torque app, even if the app provides no explanation, you can look the number up in the manual. You might not even need a dongle to do it. I believe the dash will display an error code (not the same as the DTC #) which you can also look up in the manual. And most of the PIDs can be read by cheap dongle+torque, so we aren't missing a whole lot (that I know of) by not having the OEM diagnostic tools. Except the ability to modify/map new data tables ("tune" the engine) which hopefully this Kess/Ktag bit has covered.

Yeah, 100% agreed. If anyone has an XR4155 that they could stand being down for a week, I would love to rent the ECU from you for a week or so sometime a little later after I confirm my kit will talk to it.

Watch "Turning Up the Fuel on a Diesel Turbo Charged Tractor New Holland TL-90 by Everything Attachments" on YouTube

I was go in to do some more research before replying to this because I don't want to look stupid, but by the time I get around to it, you probably will have already concluded that everyone just ignored your input. So I'll go ahead and address it prematurely.

The New Holland TL90 in the video was produced between 1999 and 2004. I don't know what the emissions standards were then, or how the fuel rails were setup. But it was my (possibly mistaken) understanding that my 2017 model tractor with tier 4 emissions has an extremely high pressure fuel system already, with injector pressures being controlled by computer, such that they can't really be "turned up" with a screw like on older tractors. It was my understanding that the "screw" for turning up the fuel on this machine is digital, and that's why I've been digging so hard into the OBD port. I was also of the understanding that when changes are made to the fuel mapping, corresponding changes must be made to the emissions system parameters.

If I'm wrong about all that, please let me know. I'd be delighted to be wrong in this case.

couldn't you just buy an ecu and pop it in your current tractor to see if it works?

I'm sure it would work, but the ECU costs >$2,500 and has the same part number for XR4140/XR4145/XR4150/XR4155 (LS P/N 40284461). I imagine either:
1. When you order it, they ship you a blank slate which you're expected to bring to your dealer for programming
2. You're supposed to submit special instructions with the purchase, indicating which tractor it's for, and they program it before they ship it.
In either case, I'm betting heavily they expect some sort of proof as to which tractor you purchased/own.

Well, if it's a blank slate, sounds like you have your answer. :D

Egads that's expensive as f**k tho.

I have the SM but haven’t perused it in depth yet. I will have to connect with one of my scanners.

Ironically I had the opportunity to prove the concept today. Tractor tried to go into regen and started freaking out, flashing lights, flashing a code. I bumped up the RPM and it calmed down, code went away, regen commenced. I looked up the dash code in the service manual and it is a Regen Overload. Just for grins I hooked the Amazon scanner and read + cleared the stored DTC. Torque recognized the DTC code and provided an explanation.
