How do you tie down tractors when hauling on a trailer?

Do you know how much 1/2" chain weighs and costs? I used 4-3/8" chains to boom down 60,000# excavators.

Why? Which law did I break? Justify your statement. DOT was around our rig all the time. Never cited for anything other than speeding and an oil leak on the wet kit.

4 chains isn't enough for an ex. You would need another for the boom.

no disrespect intended, Ive been trucking for 28 yrs, heavy haul for 18, I believe dot says you have to have enough tie down capacity to match the weight of your load. 3/8 G70 has a working load limit of 6600lbs , so your 60,000 excavator should of had 10 chains. overkill, yes , i think so ( Ive hauled them with 4 binders on the tracks and chain across the boom) but now days dot doesn't play as well. Just my .02 worth.C-Ya

Or 5 G80 1/2" chains, should put you right at 60,000lbs.

They are heavy and expensive, but if that's what's legally called for...

Quick note on attaching straps / chains:
- So far I haven't had any problems with the chain / straps coming loose while hauling equipment, but have heard stories of bad bounces, sudden stops, flat tires, ... where they have. An old logger taught me to:
- Straps: I drop them through the stake pockets then hook them over the top edge vs hooking them on the bottom of the pocket. This decreases the risk of them unhooking if the strap should get slack in it.
- Chains: I do the same thing when possible. If going thru D rings or such, after hooking the hook to the chain, I use wire to secure the hook to where it can not come loose if slack should occur. I have a substantial investment in the old style break over lever chain binders. I still use then without any problems. I also wire the handle in place as well as the hooks.

If your load is under 10K lbs. technically you only need two chains/straps. I would put one on each corner of the tractor though. Then if you have a loader, or rear attachment, put an additional one on those too.

It doesn't work like that. You have to post a picture of it so that we can all tell you what you're doing wrong.

Seriously, though... If you use chains or straps rated for the full weight of your tractor and have one coming off each corner of your tractor you will be just fine. Secure each implement with it's own strap or chain. Check your load after the first few miles of driving to correct for any shifting, and then check it every 100 miles or so after that.
