How far is too far for driving tractor on the road?

It would be OK, for a 100 pto hp high but OK. That TYM is only 80 pto hp on a common rail injection engine that would be very high it should be much less. So yes that 80 hp TYM shouldn't be using any where near 10 gpm 4 would be realistic. A new common rail injection engine should generate much better hp\gal\hr numbers then an older style mechanical injected engine. So anything over 4 gallons per hour would be high.
Again…I was only questioning your 4GPH at full load is too much for a 88 hp PTO tractor( from tractor data)

I’m showing the NTTL site is down for maintenance. Maybe you can provide some examples of their testing of similar tractors in the 88 PTO hp range, that consume less than 4 GPH @full load.
I’d like to see a couple examples of who makes such an efficient machine. Not saying it’s not possible.

Well a rainy morning so I did a bit of digging, yes 4 gph on an 80 pto hp tractor would be good, I should have said much over 5 gph.
This a NH T4-95 fuel and hp data table.
As far as I know Nebraska only test USA made tractors over 40 hp, I have never seen a Nebraska test on a Korean tractor.

My 90 HP tractor uses less than 2 GPH at road speeds. Road driving a tractor is not hard on the tractor. My issue would be death. I've had several friends hit by cars and trucks while roading a tractor. 2 in the last 3 years.

Lots of great feedback thanks to all. So to answer a few of the questions that have come up. My disc is 6 Ft standard 10 blade. I do not have any liquid ballast in my tires. The terrain is a mixture of flat (about 1/2) hilly (about 1/2) and some parts can be pretty curvy. Its not the foot hills kinda hilly but maybe a 100-200 ft elevation changes in those hills.

In NC I have never heard of any road rules for tractors. So I had to look it up... Excerpt from nc dot.

"Q: Why can’t I drive my farm equipment on any road in North Carolina? A: Farm equipment is allowed on any state system road except interstates and fully controlled access roads (freeways). "

As for taxed and non taxed diesel. According to NC:
It is unlawful to use dyed diesel fuel in a vehicle that is licensed (or required to be licensed) for highway use. A person who violates this law is guilty of a Class 1 Misdemeanor and liable for a civil penalty of the greater of $1,000 or five times the amount of motor fuel tax payable on the fuel in the supply tank.

We do not need licenses for road use for our tractors in NC.

Not a huge deal either way for me. I can put taxed diesel in it for a weekend, but prefer saving the .40 ish cents a gallon if I can.

I usually get at least 4 ish hours on a tank of fuel when using it at about 2500 rpm. No worries though as there are fuel stations all along the way anyway.

I found I have a friend willing to loan me a trailer that will haul tractor (about 5k # and disc about 800# I think). Its not until next spring so I am on the lookout for a truck to haul it with. I like the uhaul idea. I also found a rental agency (I think it was Enterprise) that rents 3/4 ton trucks. They say it has a 7k towing capacity so I should be good there too.

I can drive it pretty much anywhere I have needed to go. Drove it home from the dealer about 5 miles away and back once for service. I sold my dump truck because I was putting less than 100 miles a year on it at the farm. It mainly got used by family/friends wanting to borrow it.

I was only traveling 8 miles each way, but be aware you're going to wear out your steering tires much faster than you might expect.

Maybe not.

There's a lot of factors involved with front tire wear when roading.

Radial tires at proper pressure don't wear bad for me. Cheap, non radial tires will wear much quicker on roads.

I literally drive both my tractors hundreds of miles a year between agriculture projects. I'm on my second year with both tractors and there's no appreciable wear on any tire of either tractor. I'll probably run a much higher risk of running over something in a field or pasture and ruining a tire before wearing them out on a road.

My front non radial R4's are about shot from roading over the past 8 years and 1100 hours. I also go through a set of rear turfs on my diesel zero turn every 4-500 hours from roading between contacts in a 1 mile radius. Cost of doing business.

There are some farmers here that will drive a combine 120 miles one way at harvest time. It's cheaper than hauling because of the permits needed.

There is a tricycle spreader that comes through every few years spreading lime. He covers nearly every farm in the 2 County area getting rid of lime for paper mills.
