I have only lived n places that have professional firefighters. I had a couple of volunteer firefighters that I worked with. They primarily did it for the pension. The state takes one percent of insurance premiums and sets it aside for this pension fund. Works great for volunteers.
I think most all the firefighters are professional volunteer and career.
I wish our state would do the pension thing for the volunteer's it would keep more people involved (including me).

Personally I would LIKE to be a Vol EMT, but I'm not sure I have enough spare time to make it worth it to them...

Have you contacted the organization that you wish to join? Find out what the minimum requirements are. I know for my Fire-Rescue department we don't have any minimum attendance requirements, but we do require all new members to complete Firefighter 1 training (162 hours) within 18 months of joining.
