How many miles on your vehicle before sell or trade?

Mind you, in a sense, every mile is a penalty in fuel consumption. One would have to do the math.

The old checker cabs. They too must have been terrible on fuel consumption but were probably bulletproof.

The thing about NYC cabs I didn't know until we visited there: The modern cabs are often Prius or Escape hybrids, gas/electric. Why? fuel economy obviously. But another reason was immediately obvious: these have better acceleration from a stoplight or traffic jam than the gas equivalent over in the next lane. With drivers continually jockeying to get through traffic, maneuvering quickly to get to an opening first is a real advantage.

The NYC Checker cabs a couple of generations ago were Chevrolet with solider bodywork. With 30 cent gasoline, economy wasn't as important as reliability. And a couple of generations before that, DeSotos with fold-down jump seats facing the rear seat to fit in more passengers. Large, solid, indestructible.

Does anywhere still have retired police cruisers for taxicabs? 20 years ago the airport shuttles here were Crown Victorias in absurdly poor condition - one or no rear shocks etc.

will continue using as daily drivers, all the above in excellent working order (lots of maintenance $ through the years)
but wouldn't dream of purchasing a new vehicle

Checker still has a loyal following and in good shape command a premium as a collector vehicle...

Interesting history of the company that almost dodged the bullet... as trade was opening up a very large order for cabs that would have kept the door open came too late... it was from China wanting to outfit their airports in Checker Cabs... but... there is a move to open production in 2018...

Bought a 2007 Silverado new and drove it 435,000 miles. Sold it to my neighbor and bought a 2017. I maintained the 07 and it drives as good as my new truck. They will go a lot of miles if you are willing to do the maintenance.

Friend of mine is a rural mail carrier. His current vehicle is a 2005 Jeep Wrangler with 350K miles on it. That's on rural gravel roads using 4wd occasionally to recover himself. Has no intentions of retiring it. I'm thinking his Jeep would easily do 500K under NYC conditions.

Sounds like a keeper to me.........:thumbsup:

A lot of Taxis in the Toronto Area are using the old Crown Vic Cruisers as cabs.

I drove three old cruisers starting in the late 70s, two of them propane. Good vehicles, except they all needed a tranny soon after getting them. My favorite was the 82 Malibu, converted to propane. After getting some carpet and reupholstered the 60/40 cloth bench seat, it was a great car.

I very much miss the comfortable (soft) cloth seats back then and the carpet on the doors. Much nicer than the interior of an 80 grand (cdn) pickup today. Even the dash was made of soft foam padded vinyl, not this ugly hard (noisy) plastic!

I've got a twin to his Jeep, same red color. Mine has 26K miles. He is always jokingly asking me if he can borrow it to haul mail for a few days....... He'd put more gravel road miles on it in a day than it's had in it's whole life!!!!

I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid w/ 235,000+ miles. I've kept it maintained, it's reliable, doesn't leak oil, etc. but I have difficultly getting in and out of it these days because it sits low to the pavement and I can't bend enough to get my head in without hitting the door frame. So, this will be its last year with us. I fully expect it to have another 75,000 miles in it.
My other one is a 2012 F250 diesel w/ 140,000 +/- miles
I usually, but not always, buy new and keep them until they are no longer reliable.

This is the info I wanted/like to hear. I too have a 2007 silverado. Would love to get 400,000 miles on it reliably.
