How many people own or have owned a vehicle which went over 300,000 miles?

I had a 79' Toyota 2wd with a non turbo diesel I had bought used. You had to pick your battles wisely when entering a high speed road but it got around 36-40mpg. No guts but still enough torque that I had transmission issues which I had heard was common with that truck. I pulled the trans and had a friend rebuild it. Other than that and normal maintenance, I sold it with 225k. A couple of years later, I happened to speak with the person that I sold it to. He had 350k on it with normal maintenance.

We had a '79 Toyota Corolla that we put about 150,000 miles on and the worst problem we ever had with it was the paint faded really bad. It started running a little hot and when changing the thermostat didn't stop that we just sold it as it was not primary transportation any more by that time. otherwisw, a great car.

This was the aforementioned Avalon at 215K or so when I resealed the valve covers. Just regular dino juice every 5K, no synthetic. I was commuting 750 miles per week between 123k and when i sold it at 217k.

Several years ago I read even the dino oil was now like 25% synthetic just to meet standards. Perhaps it was the SN standard.

Honestly probably more due to being a car that was probably always brought up to full temp for a length of time after it was started. Moisture is a huge factor in sludge buildup and short trips are horrible for engines, newer engines are better but still not great.

Working in a independent shop for many years I got to see a lot of different makes/models and mileage's, the worst were typically elderly owned vehicles that were driven slow and short trips.

I remember a Crown Vic with the 4.6L came in, only had about 30-40k miles and looked immaculate but the sludge buildup was so bad we couldn't salvage the engine and had to replace it. Oil was changed on schedule.

Yep... the old adage about highway miles.

We would take on trade the little old lady cars and were very low miles and garage kept... sometimes just blowing them out on the freeway with fresh oil would make a world of difference... still remember one would only need to buy gas every couple of months... and this is before ethanol...

I had a 06 Scion XA that i bought new. I made it to 299k when a deer jumped on my hood going 60+ down the highway. I was really upset for a long time that I never got 300k+ out of it. I did all the maintenance myself. oil changes every 10k with synthetic. Wheel bearings every 150k, I live on a very rough road. I think the car would have got to 500k+. it never leaked or burned and oil.

I was at 290k when a deer laid on the hood of my chevy prism at 15mph. To be honest, it was starting to use a bit of oil. I gave it to my nephew and he rebuilt the engine. He said that version of the engine had poor oil handling so it wore faster. The replacement pistons had extra oil ports. It still has the dimpled hood on it though.

I have a '97 F350 with around 350K on the clock, lived a HARD life before me, it's a 7.3L power stroke with 5 speed trans, 35" tires and barely moves now without towing something... has my 10.5' camper on the back right now... got 14mpg hauling it to the coast and back last weekend. To be fair, I got the truck 5 years ago with 327k on it I think, apparently has about 200k on the engine, no idea on the clutch, I did front brakes a couple years ago, replaced the high pressure oil pump, engine could use an overhaul since there's some blowby and the turbo doesn't do what it should anymore, and it needs an intercooler, injectors and a chip and it'll do everything I could want it to...

The west coast is nice on vehicles, there's almost no rust on that thing, or my '00 Explorer with 5.0L V8 with 236k on it, or my '90 Ranger with 210k on it, or my wifes '98 Explorer with 230k on it (5.0L as well)...

The Ranger doesn't count on the being "original" thing as nothing is original, '86 Thunderbird turbo 2.3L, '89 Ranger chassis (swapped to 4x4 14 years ago), random year Explorer axles, etc...

You 300k miles guys sure drive a lot.

I've had 3 trucks since 1990 and the total for all 3 is around 260k with 79k on the current 2007 F250.

I've had 3 cars during that time but they only totaled about 50k.

This doesn't count miles in the wife's vehicles but I'm impressed by how many miles some people drive.

I bought the wife a new Toyota Tundra 2 years ago, and took her 94 Dodge ram diesel and converted it to a work truck for me, by adding a 2200# rated bed slide. The truck already had a topper. The vehicle has 308,000 miles on it. Put in a new transmission when it had 150,000 miles. All is running good with the truck now.
