How much can a 1 ton truck tow?

I too am a little skeptical of the numbers you were given.

Even the 2014 chevys with the 6.0 arent listed to tow that much. But the internet is full of inaccurate information, so what I see may not be accurate.

The site I linked earlier dont even list my dodge's configuration. (3500 DRW Quad LWB with 3.73). Only lists 4.10's.

Dad owns a 2004 Chevy DRW 6.0 and 4.10's. Its got a whopping 9700# tow rating.

For 2014, I didnt see any gas engines capable of towing over 16k. Had to go diesel to get over that mark. I just dont think a truck of 10 years older with gasser is there. Especially bumper pull with a heavy dump body.

You guys got to compare apples with apples. Cab and chassis trucks usually are rated a little different.

IIRC, there were some chevy/GMC trucks back in the 90's that were 3500's and had really high GVWR's. Something like 14 or 15k. And they had a little 4" or so extra piece of grill between the plastic grill and bumper???

Not sure what that would do to tow ratings. But in any case, I still wouldnt want to put 16k behind a 6.0 gasser of 10 years ago, regardless of rating

I think around the 2000 era they were 3500 "classic."

The op's truck is a '92 with a 350.

there was the 3500 HD which had a 15K GVWR they started in 91 (to 2000??) and were only available as a cab and chassis similar to the F superduty from 89-97

I used a 1979 chevy c3500 flatbed 1 ton with plate hitch to tow 10 ton trailer with a case 580 backhoe on it. I towed with it for 5 years.

And since the MAX tow capacities for a 1-ton in the 80's and early 90's was only around 10K, and since we have just now (in the last 5 or so years) had 1-tons that were even rated to tow 20k +/-, I am betting that the 20k he was towing with a 1979 was well over its limits. Legally and otherwise.

Just because the trailer is rated for 10K doesn't mean it weighs 10K.

no, but a 580 backhoe is 12k lbs+ so add in a trailer and you're getting closer to 20K lbs
