How much can a 1 ton truck tow?

i think it will come down to whether your state/usage recognizes the manufacturer towing rating as a legal rating. not all do.

Even if they didnt, its still gonna be over 26k, which is CDL territory. MAybe he has one? Maybe not. Maybe he has the truck registered for the weight? Maybe not.

MY point is, anyone who reads this may think that they can do the same and be fine because he did it. And without him to say "I have a CDL" or I am registered for this weight" or "I know this is overloaded and illegal".....someone reading this may not have a clue.

you're right and i have no idea. so much will be based on his usage and state. what if he is AG exempt i don't know. only he really would know and even then he might not know. but we can't say it is or it isn't legal. what you would do or i would do have no bearing on legality

I am pretty sure that load would be illegal in all 50 states without some special circumstances that he has failed to make us aware of.

Farm use...maybe?
Registered for the weight? maybe
Special built truck? maybe
CDL A ? Maybe

But any average joe is not gonna be legal to tow almost 20k behind a 1979 truck. And to boast about doing so without addition information is what is un-nerving to me.

And then commenting on guys towing a 25k lb dozer on a GN (probably 30k total) behind a 3/4 ton.

I really dont know weather to take that seriously or not.

I agree that if he is over 26k then it is cdl a territory, but as far as the truck goes the way I understand it is that axle ratings are all that matter from a legal standpoint. In an accident I guess there could be a civil suit for not following manufacturer's suggested gcvwr, but as far I know that is all it is- a suggestion.

Once again. If the truck was built up by an upfitter / body builder, they have the legal capacity to re-rate any vehicle they modify. Since this truck did not come from the manufacturer with a dump body, we know that this is a very good possibility.

Florida law for weight registration

That dont mean one is legal to tow whatever they want.

All that means is when declaring a GVW on the registration, it you are under 8k, you dont have to count tongue weight from a trailer.

In other words you don't have to register the weight of the trailer with the truck if under 8000 lb born weight but you do if the truck is over that weight

I have a class A cdl. I go by axle weights and tire ratings. those combined truck and trailer are nothing to me. Those numbers are suggested. I'm not over weight on any Registered for the weight, axles, tires or even the custom built frame hitch with a 10 ton hitch under my bumper. The goose neck hitch in my bed is rated for 30,000 pound trailer. The next time I see a guy towing a d5 behind a old 3/4 ton I will take a pic. I don't see suggested combined rating on cars or small pickups does that mean I can tow 20,000 behind one. I don't think 20,000 is that much more then a rating on a 12,000 pound pickup. Now I seen guy in IL towing a case 1845c skidsteer behind a chevy astro van which is nuts.
