How much can a 1 ton truck tow?

Just because the trailer is rated for 10K doesn't mean it weighs 10K.

According to him, the trailer is actually rated for 20k. Which makes the trailer at least 5k empty. Probably more if a GN.

And depending on what series of 580, 12k minimum. And if 4wd, cab, ext. hoe, etc. Could be pushing 15k for the trailer.

In either case, That combination is more than my 05 3500 DRW diesel is rated for and more than it is legal for. So I am pretty sure a 1979 is gonna be in the same boat.

A local contractor used his '96 Chevy 3/4 ton ECSB 6.5L diesel to tow his Case 580 4wd backhoe on a 20K tag trailer with a pintle hitch.
One day he was entering a driveway and when the back of the truck drove into a slight depression, the class IV receiver hitch pulled it's mounting bolts through the frame. That's when he decided to use a class 7 truck to tow the load.

No way would I een consider attempting that load with a want to do that with a BP.

I have exceeded my own trucks tow rating, and legality with a few pulls. I have moved a D3 and my backhoe before. Never more than 10 miles, back roads, and slow speeds. Would not even think of doing it with a truck of 2 or 3 generations ago.

The wheel wasn't reinvented with your 05 dodge. I have towed with old trucks and newer trucks.

What I find funny about are nation on how you can tell a man on how to lets say make some money and now days you get a response back of ( do you need a permit is that legal) . I like to say something about 79 c3500 when I had it inspected it had that trailer behind it though the IL truck inspection facility.

I never said it was. But an 05 has a higher tow rating than a 79. And knowing that it wouldnt be legal with my truck........

It isnt funny at all. Its reality.

IF you get into a fatal accident with a 1979 3500 towing a 20k load today, you would likely be spending the rest of your natural life in prison. Weather the accident was your fault or not.

Now weather I agree with that or not doesnt matter. Its the reality we live in. And a reality that some dont seem to grasp until its too late. When someone comes on this forum and boasts about how they did something that I believe was not smart, and not legal without so much as a disclaimer like "dont do this" or "this probably isnt legal" , then yes I will call you out on it.

CAn it be done? Yes. Can it be done safely? yes. Is it legal? NO. The last thing I want is someone reading one of these posts and think they can do it too, because you did it. And then the worst happens.
