for years (up until about 1998 or 1999) diesel was always about 20 to 30 cents cheaper. Now it is flip flopped and diesel is always more then super duper.

We are at 2.48 in NorthWest IL. I saw it at Walmart for 2.38. The fact that diesel is now about 25 cents more than gas should make the EPA happy seeing how they hate diesels. There are some diesel vehicles that are supposed to become available here, like Jeep Liberty and others. These prices seem like they would damp the desire to pay more to own one. This increase over regular gas has sure reduced the fuel advantage of my Dodge Cummins. I would like to know why diesel is so much. I have heard many different reasons but I suspect I have not heard the truth.

The price of diesel and the low milage (for me) on my 1997 Powerstroke is the #1 reason why I got rid of it in 2002. The fuel was killing me. Over $200 per month on fuel alone, back then. I now pay about $110 per month for 2 cars (my car and my wifes)! I will take the $90 in savings, less working on the car, etc etc.

I like diesels, but not much. Unless they improve the mpg to about 35 to 40, they are out of the pix for me. I will take my GSXR to work (as I do now). More power & speed anyways.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't drive my truck except when I need to but I can't be without it. We have cars as well for any activity that does not require the truck. I drive it about 5000 miles a year. I doubt I'd pay extra for a diesel truck today though. Even a Volkswagon TDI against a Honda Accord would not be all that attractive at current fuel prices.

Part of the reason I bought the diesel in the truck is to get away from so much high tech electronics. Mine is a 97 and can be mostly fixed with a wrench. I'm keeping it the rest of my life. I'm in the high tech business and really don't want that crap in my cars or tractors. Switches, sensors and intercnnections are a royal PITA to me. I have enough of those problems in our industrial electonics equipment. Finding service people who understand it is getting very difficult.

Couple of data points:

When I filled up the RAM about a week ago it was $2.45/gal at the local independent station 2 minutes from my house. Did some checking on diesel prices in my immediate area (Akron/Canton) - nothing lower than about $2.40.

About a week or so ago I was also over in the Youngstown area on I-80/I-76 (about 50 miles away) and there were 3 or 4 truckstops that were selling at like $2.249/gal ........ /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif (Unfortunately I wasn't driving the RAM /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif)

Was back there a couple of days ago and it had crept up to like $2.38/gal .... what's up with that ?

I have no idea why there is so much variation. I've seen 10 cents differnce at two Mobil station that are a couple miles apart. Someone is jerking us around.

It'll give you pricing info for your area. On the left side, you can change it to diesel as well as narrow it down to your area.

Oil prices strike historic high.

LONDON: World oil prices hit record levels on Wednesday here and in New York on heightened supply concerns and ahead of crucial US stockpiles data that was expected to show lower crude and gasoline reserves.

Expectations of falling stockpiles in the United States, the world’s biggest oil consumer, have added to concerns about tight supply, especially going into the northern hemisphere winter, dealers said. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in September, gained 37 cents to 62.26 dollars per barrel in electronic dealing after earlier hitting a record 62.31 dollars.

That beat Monday’s record of 62.30 dollars, made on the back of lingering concerns for crude products later in the year. In London on Wednesday, the price of Brent North Sea crude oil for delivery in September added 54 cents to 61.16 dollars, a fresh high point, beating the previous record of 60.98 dollars also set on Monday.

"Crude oil continues its steady march upwards," said Barclays Capital analyst Sudakshina Unnikrishnan. "With a spate of (US) refinery problems placing concern over gasoline availability, the market is likely to react positively to another fall in gasoline inventory in today’s oil releases." The US Department of Energy (DoE) was scheduled to release its weekly snapshot of crude stocks later on Wednesday.

Adjusted for inflation, oil prices remain far below levels reached in the wake of the 1979 Iranian revolution when prices surged to upwards of 80 dollars a barrel in today’s money. Market concerns are focused on fears there may not be enough key products such as heating oil for the fourth quarter, with tight supplies to meet robust "worldwide demand. Phil Flynn, a broker with Chicago-based Alaron Trading, said a major reason for the price spike was the solid growth in the US economy, singling out the expansion in the manufacturing sector.

The US economy grew 3.4 per cent in the second quarter while the US ISM manufacturing index also rose to 56.6 per cent in July from 53.8 in June, showing American industries are in expansion mode. "The big leap in the number extends growth in US manufacturing for the 26th consecutive month," Flynn said. "July was the strongest showing of the year and sends signals that demand for energy will remain robust as we round out the rest of this year."

Problems in US refining capacity "come at a critical time" and add to the market jitters, he added. Although consumers have access to large supplies of heavy, sour crude, refiners prefer light, sweet oil because of its low sulphur content and relatively high yields of gasoline, heating oil as well as diesel and jet fuel. The Brent contract, based on light, sweet crude oil taken from the North Sea, is used to price more than 65 per cent of the world’s traded crude oil supplies, according to London’s International Petroleum Exchange (IPE).

I find it interesting that we are talking about the cost of fuel with concern. It appears that there aren't many that care like we do. Has the cost of fuel slowed down the NasCar wannabes out there? Nope, not at all. 80 in a 70 is still the order of the day! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Diesel here has been running between $2.50, and $2.32, separated by about a mile. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
