Speaking of the dog, I will miss her myself. Mom is 87 and I have helped with bathing her, taking her to the vet etc since my dad died in 1999. My brother and I visit every couple of weeks and Prissy (a Schnauzer) aways greeted us with vocal excitement. We knew she was terminal for the last couple of weeks, and was nearly 13 years old. I feel bad for Mom, it was her last pet and at 87 won't be able to take care of a new one. She specifically requested Prissy be buried on my place, so this what we had to do. She is buried near Fudge, our cocker who died 2 years ago, and CJ, my daughters 130 pound St. Bernard/Great Peerinees(?). Seems like life is clicking by at a fast pace, seems only yesterday these were all 8 week old pups.

I did the same thing about 2 yrs ago for a Black Lab mix, Tazzy was 14 yrs old and a good dog, She was buried next to about 4 or 5 other dogs that were my brothers whom dies over the last 4~5 years also. Same as you area I started using is all Clay with rock intermixed. luckily there is a stream that water can be gotten out of and poured into/on the start of the hole that makes digging easier. The easiest way I found is to used the rear tiller to make holes, till deep FEL to scrape come back & till again. once you are down a foot or two it is about all the tiller can do to help unless you till wide enough to get the rear tires down into the hole as well. I found tilling 4~6' long turn 180 degrees remove loose soil, turn around & back into hole and till again repeat until deep enough. this also makes covering hole up easier as soil is all ground up. most times I will scrape off the top of the grass/weeds first to keep tiller clean cutting.
I have a frame mount back hoe attachment for REAL digging but that takes 30 min to put on after removing 3pt arms and parts. and a 20 min to remove so unless it is frozen or I need a LARGE DEEP hole the FEL & TILLER gets the job.

My Mom's deep, wide as the FEL since I was using it. I would have had a heart attack trying to dig by hand, and almost dide. After about 15 minutes and a hole about 3" deep with the FEL, I put the post hole FEL I ended up sliding into the hole and had to pull my tractor out with the truck.

There has to be a better way short of a $6000 backhoe.

That's what's great about a Bx23 24 or25 .
They cost about the same with a BH as many other tractors run with out a BH .
