How to fix crushed Gas can

First time I tried this on a 32" 4x4 tire we forgot to loosen the strap as we inflated the tire. Ever see a 2" nylon strap let go???
Still do it (30yrs later) but we let the tension off as soon as the beads catch...

30 years ago a lot of us were younger and dumber, but I never made the mistake of leaving the strap tight while inflating the tire. Cannot imagine the psi you put in that tire to make a 2 inch strap break...I personally have never used one over an inch wide.

I watched them on the "Swamp Logger" show, reseat a tire bead with I think propane and a lit piece of paper, nice little explosion popped that bead right into place. It worked but I wouldn't try it.

Most of the folks that do that use ' STATING FLUID. in a spray can. Me never did it. Ain't gona start now either.

But it do work.

Done it many times, it is a tried and true trick. Best tip is to use a high quality starting fluid that DOESN'T use Co2 for propellant, as many do.

As for the strap trick, when doing smaller tires such as wheel barrow or "two wheeler" (freight dolley), wrap 5 or 6 turns of tightly stratched electrical tape instead. It applies even pressure without the bulge that ratchet straps create. learned that one out on the road in a pinch.

First, my cans draw in and puff back out all the time. I didn't know it was a big deal and when I set a partially collapsed can out in the sun and closed up, it just puffs out. Beats me.

Second, used fuel cans, be they plastic or metal, go for a song at farm or estate auctions around here. Last fall I bought five cans for $5 total. A plastic diesel, two plastic gas, a metal 6 gallon gas and a gas "safety" can ($40 new), all in excellent condition. This is a typical price since no one, other than us, seems to want them at auction. And they're the good ones.

Third, if anyone tries the match or flame-in-the-can idea, maybe post photos.

Does anyone know an easy way to rehabilitate a crushed plastic gas can? I am not sure why this happens... and I don't really care. I have about 5 cans that look like this. I am looking to make them useful again.
Put some gas in it and screw the cap on tight and set it in the sun. It will balloon back out and it will also tell you if any of the surface is cracked bad enough to have to replace. It doesn't take much gas to do this. My six gallon imploded. I put a tad of gas in it it and in the hot sun it fattened up nicely and held pressure. I released the pressure, refilled it and stored in a cool place. Robert

My 2 newest gas cans have that awesome enviro no spill valve thing on top instead of that horrible yellow spout with a cap. (end sarcasm). My cans were filled in the winter and just last week I found one of the full ones with the opposite problem yours has, bloated. So disappointing.

From here forward I need to remember to twist those ones loose when I sit them full or empty. Since those caps suck so much I only use them as dirt preventers while I'm using one of the other cans. When I get to using one that has that valve lid, I swap it for the old yellow spout and cap.

Anyone know if it was a law or EPA regulation that got us that crapo valve cap thing?

I've read many of these posts and finally figured I'd show you my favorite method. I don't care HOW badly your can is dented, mangled, squashed, or has been run over by Austin Powers, this will work EVERY time.
