How to get rid of horses?

Eddie, best wishes for your wife and you. Our family has been through it. My wife, due to health issues (but not cancer) can no longer effectively care for the six that we have but will not consider "getting rid of any". I guess I should take comfort that we only have six and not the thirteen we used to have. Anyway, I agree with what has been mentioned already. Look for a reputable rescue group to take them. The operative word here is reputable because not all are.

I also agree that now is not the time. Bite the bullet until you wife is on the mend then have an heart to heart talk with her.

As for the biting, I follow the "three second rule". If a horse mouths me, I slam him in the chest within three seconds if possible. After that, they won't necessarily know why you hit them. I try not to hit them in the mouth because that can make them shy of other mouth related necessities such as worming or inserting a bit. That said, I will if the infraction merits it. While most of the mouthing is just part of wanting to be the boss, horses can do some serious damage including ripping off one of your arms.

The bullying behavior is normal though annoying. It can also be dangerous should a bully provoke another horse into reacting and running you over. Not sure how you feed but the bullies should be confined if possible while feeding.

Eddie, the most important thing is your wife's health. That has to be your focus.

I wouldn't approach the idea of finding the two rascal horses new homes until you do some research as to who may want them. I'd put notices on bulletin boards at the local feed stores, vet offices, etc. Others mentioned Facebook and farriers. Once you find someone interested you can discover the who, what , when, where, why of those people. Then when you bring up the negative part of the horses with your wife, you can have an answer that can be comforting to her.

Not too far from me is a game farm, where they have exotic animals, including grizzlies, lions, tigers, etc. they take in horses. Rumor is they keep them visible to the donating family for a month or so. Then they become food for the animals. That is the rumor anyway, I cannot verify. Just so you know about some places that take Horses considering your wifes feelings.

We used to sell horse hay to customers that mostly had pleasure horses that were rarely ridden. The one thing I took away from that is how passionate horse people are about their hobby and how devoted they are to their horses. I have seen people deprive themselves of what I consider to be life's necessities in order to provide for their horses. Horse people, especially women, are different than you or I in this regard.

As well, I have been close to people with cancer diagnoses both mild and severe and I would say all affected were in a cautious state of mind in that they view everything that involves them as a potential reaction to their cancer. If getting rid of some horses is presented the wrong way, I could see them seeing it as a sign of their own mortality and others steamrolling them in their vulnerability.

I'm sure you've thought of these things but just wanted to point out what I have seen.

Eddie...I think you have gotten lots of good advise and have it figured out by now. Your wife comes first and I would not do anything that would upset her at this stage in the game. If she agrees to getting rid of the horses now, that is Great. Otherwise, hang in there and work at it a little along later. I have seen Horse Disease in some of my friends and it is Dreadful.

My advise to all of you...Three things I would never have:
1. A boat too big to trailer.
2. A swimming pool.
3. A pack of dogs.

And I am amending it to four things:
4. Horses.

Craigslist works in Maine- Look up similar papered/registered quarter horses, their age and how much they are selling for. 3, 4 year olds is a good age to train. Price the horses - 1500 - 2500. You can always drop the price to an established buyer. A solid price will cut out the riff raff that will come looking. Nice looking horses. - If they are registered, get their papers in order - people will want to see them, and if they buy, transfer registration. Just like with dogs. bloodlines matter.
