I have found that it's best not to call ahead and check inventory. If a salesman knows you're the guy he talked to from an hour or two away, the price is pretty well set at any number he may have tossed out over the phone. He'll assume the number was good if it got you there.
You'll always get your best deal on something that's sitting in inventory. The only way to find the deal is to visit the dealers and look over their inventories. Try things out and get prices on any equipment that meets your needs. Be willing to walk away, and never feel like it is the only machine that will ever be made to suit your needs. New equipment is made everyday, and people trade equipment everyday. Two years ago I actually had a salesman call me up two weeks after walking away; He offered me a one day cash deal at 2500 less than his best price two weeks earlier. It was too good to pass up and I took it.
If you're patient, you will hit a deal that is too good to walk away from. The only way to know is doing the legwork. There is no substitute for good old-fashioned shoppping.
