How to get the best price on a new Bobcat, from a salesman.

I have found that it's best not to call ahead and check inventory. If a salesman knows you're the guy he talked to from an hour or two away, the price is pretty well set at any number he may have tossed out over the phone. He'll assume the number was good if it got you there.

You'll always get your best deal on something that's sitting in inventory. The only way to find the deal is to visit the dealers and look over their inventories. Try things out and get prices on any equipment that meets your needs. Be willing to walk away, and never feel like it is the only machine that will ever be made to suit your needs. New equipment is made everyday, and people trade equipment everyday. Two years ago I actually had a salesman call me up two weeks after walking away; He offered me a one day cash deal at 2500 less than his best price two weeks earlier. It was too good to pass up and I took it.

If you're patient, you will hit a deal that is too good to walk away from. The only way to know is doing the legwork. There is no substitute for good old-fashioned shoppping.

My first premise is, if it is not a good deal for the seller and a good deal for me, it is not a good deal. Second premise, different dealers have different needs at different times, so you just have to shop around and educate yourself. I don't want to chisel the seller, but I don't want him to put one over on me. Third premise, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need. (OK, I know I stole that line.)

If I have the time I like to visit the lot when they are closed and look over everything at my leisure before I drop in to talk. I might do that with two or three dealers before I talk to any of them. That way I know what is out there and what condition its in if its used and maybe what I can expect to pay for it if there's a sticker on it.

Also use the same advice as when buying a car.
Go on the last day of the month in the afternoon preferably when light rain is falling. Your first words are 'I've come to buy a tractor and I'll pay cash.'

He will reply, 'Sorry, we only sell cars'.
