I have a '93 Ford Festiva. 235,000 miles. I've taken the back seat out of it.
This thing has been amazing to me, for what it can haul and do. But its reaching a point that it isn't road worthy, so I want to sell it. And I want to sell it cheap, but I don't want some young person buying it to fix up. In my mind this car should have an afterlife, but it should be as a Race Platform or a Farm Vehicle.
Is there specific, legal, language I can use to prohibit its use as a road vehicle. And I know what "as is, where is," means. Can I say in the title transfer, what use the car can have? Mainly, you can't fix this up to be road worthy. I want it to be either a farm vehicle or a race car frame.

Take your car and title to the recycler. If you sell it, it belongs to someone else. Why do you want to be so controlling over someone else's property?

I think your heart is in the right place. However, you can't fix/save stupid. The buyer that is...

i guess you could write the ad to say, not roadworthy, if you are trying to CYA. save a copy of that.

Maybe obscure part or all of the VIN on the car and paperwork. This idea just a shot in the dark.

Do you want to buy it $1,200? :)

I already have a lot full of junk cars. I'll trade you a '93 Mustang Convertible. A new top is more than it's worth.

As said, but somehow not read correctly, I don't want someone thinking this is a a good deal to be a road worthy car. It isn't and will need 400 or so dollars to replace all the bushings in the front end. Not an issue if its a farm vehicle, or a base for a race car. But I don't want to sell to someone that thinks its just a cheap car, to use on the roads. That part of this car's life is over. But it still has life in it, maybe 75K more miles. I look at UTVs, an I am thinking, you could take the doors off
You could even cut the roof off and haul a hell of a lot. As race cars, these seem to be good platforms, because they were so light.

I’d sell it and not worry about it but if you truly don’t want it on the road sell it to a dismantler and rip up the title.

I agree, except that the recycler is going to want the title.

Why bother with trying to sell it? The new owner will likely never transfer the title out of your name.

Depends on the state. Mine doesn't require (or even issue) titles for vehicles over 25 years old.

Not sure I get why the OP is trying to be so controlling over what someone does with a vehicle he sells them. I can't imagine a non-roadworthy 30+ year old econobox is gonna be a sought-after item to begin with. Lucky if someone takes it off your hands.

Parts car, not road worthy.

$1200, highly doubtful unless you sell it to exactly whom you say you dont want to have it.

Purpose-built race cars, e.g. Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, are sold without VIN or title. I'm no lawyer, but I believe if you sell it with no title, then owner cannot put it on the road without doing title restoration, which usually comes with inspection requirement.

Agreed that $1200 seems ambitious. I'd just crush it to avoid the headache of worrying about it.

Was talking with a guy yesterday. He's got a Cub Cadet 1250 that's in perfect shape but doesnt run ( ) He was saying he needs to sell it and was thinking $1500, my reply was good luck, no one wants those. Guess it never hurts to try

Disclose everything you know of wrong with it, and sell it.
I don’t understand at all, you not wanting someone to fix it up.

It’s not your property at that point.

I bought an old Ford F-600 dump truck for my farm that wasn't street legal because it didn't have any lights, registration or license plate. The seller informed me of that, and I bought it knowing that it would be too much effort and expense to get it to pass the inspection to get it street legal.

If you feel it's not safe for somebody else to fix up and use on the roads, you might remove things off of it that are needed to operate it on the roads. Then remove the plates, cancel the registration and list it for sale as off road only.

Once they buy it, I don't see how you can control what they do with it, but in my opinion, people who can only afford the least expensive vehicles usually don't put a lot of money into fixing them up.

Growing up it was fairly common to have a non street legal vehicle for riding around paths. Oh what fun it was to learn how to drift, emergency brake 180's, Rockford files reverse skids, jump small hills, push down small trees, splash through mud holes make a path through the woods on dirt paths.

Just thinking about it brings back fond memories.

True here also. Sometimes I forget that 1993 was 32 years ago.
