How would you feel about this? Business tacking on bogus charges.

So I got a quote on a backhoe bucket and I was about to order it until they tacked on $30 surcharge. It’s a marginal amount of money but it pisses me off. Am I out of line on thinking it’s lousy business practice?

Nothing surprises me anymore. This is shown as a surcharge but does not explain what its for. Could be anything but is probably made up. I hate that practice too.

Nope. They should include it in the bucket price or the shipping and handling. If you are shopping around, most times they don't include it so it makes their product look lower.

Exactly my thinking. Unfortunately I haven’t found a better option or I’d throw their quote in the trash and buy somewhere else. I didn’t mean to crop the picture the way it is but it says steel surcharge.

Why not call them, saying you would like to order it but not pay the $29.82 surcharge.
They may say no problem!

It seems like a lot of places like to tack on surcharges,
especially fuel and steel or handling and the one that really burns me a document fee.
They all tend to irritate me.

Most companies do that now and the reason for it is that the fuel or steel pricing is volatile. So they are supposes to base that on current market price at the time of the order.

But I've noticed that when fuel is very low, those surcharges don't change.

And you'll never see a negative surcharge when prices fall (aka a credit).
