HST drive trains do NOT like being moved without engine power. This is going to be an interesting topic.

One of my wishes is to have a DF type person as a neighbor. With a guy like that on your side, I'd attempt to build a nuclear power plant. He makes things very simple: some cement, some angle iron, some plutonium and wa-la... the nuclear power plant.

Shortcuts never seem to be a good idea in the long run. We all take them, I know. I have to keep telling myself at the end of the day, will a couple extra minutes really be worth the savings.

Don't mean to pile on w/ the Monday morning quarterbacking, but I don't think hauling tractor unsecured on the trailer is a "shortcut". Driving the tractor 2 miles at (say) 15 mph means it's a 8 minute trip. This is only 4 minutes longer than driving truck at 30 mph, or 2 minutes longer if driving truck 20 mph. When you add the time it takes to hitch/unhitch trailer and load/unload the tractor its a longcut.

Glad nobody was hurt. Hope fix is easy and cheap. We've all done it.. I once drove 60 miles+ at 60mph with a trailer just sitting on the 2" ball hitch that I forgot to latch. ...but by the grace of God go thee...

Definetly sounds very similar to things I do.

Hope it's an I expensive repair like the range select lever comming loose.

I don't think this should necessarily be a warning only to hst owners. What do you think the result would be if the tractor had been a gear drive, with the transmission in gear, the bakes on, and then the rear wheels hit the road like yours did. It would be just as catastrophic to that drive train, especially if it were in 4 wd.

WOW - I'm blown away by the number of reply's that this has received! So, rather
than answering each individual reply, I'll just make a blanket statement and say
thank you for all of your concerns and comments. Several of you are thinking
the same way I did as far as speculating what broke. I too am glad no one was hurt,
and believe me, I know it was a stupid move on my part, not to tie the tractor down,
just to save a few minutes. So please, no more comments about that. Thanks.
All repairs have been made, and I have several hours of use without any problems.
But I want to continue on with the story. Hopefully it will be of some help to someone
who might have a similar problem.

So, on with part 2 - teardown/diagnose.

As I mentioned earlier, several of you are thinking exactly what I was, and after reading
posts here on TBN, I also saw that this particular tractor model, JD 4200,4300,4400, has a
tendency to break the range selector shaft off. I was happy to read that, and I thought for
sure, that that was my problem. So I decided to keep tearing it down, since replacing the
selector shaft looked fairly simple. Thanks again to dfkrug for all his detailed explanations
and great photo's. Those along with the repair manual, were a great help. I removed the
rock shaft hsng so I could get a look at the internals of the range selector and PTO drive gears.
The first 2 photos are showing the internals as seen from the top. There was no damage found.
Everything functioned as it should. I decided to also remove the rear PTO cover in order to get a
look from the rear. Again, no damage seen. But there were a few small bits of metal laying in
the bottom. The 3rd photo is after removing the rear PTO cover. Upon further inspection, I
could see that there were more metal bits in the tunnel section, ahead of the rear section.
Looks like it's time to split the rear section from the tunnel. I'll get into that in part 3. For now,
I have to get busy and plow snow .... again.

With no visible gear damage makes you wonder what the HST motor looks like. If the shaft in that broke or the port block casting broke it would allow the free wheel feature.

good luck in your repairs.

Well, don't keep us in suspense. You said all repairs have been made and you have several hours on it. Show us part 3 of what you had to fix please.
