I have to install a new filter housing on a log splitter. Do I use any type of sealant on the pipe threads or tape?

you can use either if you are careful, but generally tape is not preferred because if a piece lets go in the oil it can cause an issue. ISZ

We use pipe dope at work when plumbing up hydraulics.

We use Tru-Blu thread sealant for sealing all fittings that carry liquid. Even works on NH3. If anyone shows up with Teflon tape near hydraulics they are summarily shot. J\K :)
