hydraulics. any rules of the thumb? do or don'ts?

Right, and if you suspect a leak, check for leaking fluid with a piece of cardboard, paper or wood, rather than your hand.

There shouldn't be any problem using black pipe fittings on tank return lines or suction lines. The elbows have less restriction than high pressure hydraulic fittings.

Just kinda curious about this. Is there skyway a thread for this? ? Couldn't find any. Or and advise you guys would give??
I'm not new to hydraulics bit not even close to a expert like some of you.

I will be using them in the next year's to come more and more.

How about this rule, never ever ever work on a system that is under pressure. Just because the machine is off (and it had better be) does not mean the system is not pressurized. A few souls here will show you the pictures of flesh torn from their hands from pressurized oil. And too that, never ever try and find a leak with your hand. A pinhole leak in a hose will punch right out the other side if you are not careful. Pressurized systems are incredibly dangerous (and I am not referring just to Hydraulics).
