Just kinda curious about this. Is there skyway a thread for this? ? Couldn't find any. Or and advise you guys would give??
I'm not new to hydraulics bit not even close to a expert like some of you.

I will be using them in the next year's to come more and more.

Can you be more specific? From what angle on hydraulics are you asking? Do you mean attachments? Building stuff? General maintenance?

Just all around. I'm going to be building aid possibly but just want to look all around at this topic

One cardinal rule if you are making up pipe threaded fittings; NEVER use teflon tape. I use a teflon paste and leave the first thread bare. A small piece of tape in the system can wreck havoc and be very difficult to find where it is stuck. Also do not use it on any other threads for the same reasons. Remember pipe compound is primarily a lubricant to prevent galling. Sealant is its secondary role especially for gases and high pressure liquids. The tapered pipe thread does the sealing when made up properly. "OLD" pipe fitter talkin here.

Hydraulics is a huge topic, best thing I could suggest is to go to Eaton / Vickers website and read till your hearts content! When you get a idea post it up and I am sure you will find help here. I have been doing it for a living 20 years + now and I am still learning, hopefully until I retire! As far as the pipe tape/dope debate, I use both. CJ

I've been looking for a concise guide for the basics. I know pneumatics so I figure some stuff transfers other stuff not so much. Anyone of a good guide like this pneumatic one?

Hmmm, some answers might be here and here

There's still the whole open center vs. colsed center thing I'm trying to grasp and remember which is which and some of the terms. I'd like to see a good tractor hydraulic schematic to review, also.

Open center, closed center, tandem center, open loop, closed loop ect ect. many terms and a lot of info! CJ

There's also CCLS(closed center load sensing). CCPFC(closed center pressure flow compensated)

Yea, I am starting to do a lot with the local road commission trucks and the newer ones are set up like this. Always learning. CJ

Don't use plumbing fittings on a hydraulic system.

Don't use plumbing fittings on a hydraulic system.

x2. no black iron or galvanized water fittings.

Beyond that, you are going to have to be more specific. I could write a hundred pages and not be done.

Major rule:
BEWARE of high pressure leaks. When hydraulics penetrate your skin REAL BAD things happen.

Right, and if you suspect a leak, check for leaking fluid with a piece of cardboard, paper or wood, rather than your hand.

There shouldn't be any problem using black pipe fittings on tank return lines or suction lines. The elbows have less restriction than high pressure hydraulic fittings.

Try this video series for a good basic understanding of hydraulics "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4szV1K2Chso&index=2&list=PL68FA436463CE454D"

How about this rule, never ever ever work on a system that is under pressure. Just because the machine is off (and it had better be) does not mean the system is not pressurized. A few souls here will show you the pictures of flesh torn from their hands from pressurized oil. And too that, never ever try and find a leak with your hand. A pinhole leak in a hose will punch right out the other side if you are not careful. Pressurized systems are incredibly dangerous (and I am not referring just to Hydraulics).
