Hydro vs gears for durabilty

I find it hard to discount the clutch though, it is an important part of the gear tractor, and requires splitting the tractor to change it.

From my experience around tractors, and around construction machinery, hydro transmissions are just as reliable and durable as gear/clutch transmissions. I have a farmer friend who I once asked about this. He said, out of most of his new equipment, he has to do more tinkering/adjusting/clutch replacement/etc. on his gear stuff. He said he rarely if ever has to mess with the hydro stuff. I think the key to hydro longevity is to keep the fluid clean, and filters changed just like the manual for your machine instructs you to. I will say this, once you own a hydro machine, it is very hard to go back to clutching, especially if you have a loader.

HST, I've read, is really the same system used for hydraulics in tanks, ships and other big machinery. It has to be very reliable in a tank.

These are not automatic transmissions like in cars.

My Mahindra 3215 gear has a reverser that is synced so well that you really don't have to be at complete stop to shift, though I usually do. Aaron

HC - Where i bought my Tractor (not a huge dealer ) he said he's never had to repair but 1 hydro for complete failure but has done close to 20 clutch replacements- He said he sold his first Kubota in 1978. Im sure anything mechanical is subject to failure but like others have said that all most heavy equipment uses is hydrostaic

I'd say it all depends on the operator. Highly experienced operators (not me) can probably make a clutch last hundreds, if not thousands of hours - transmissions definately in the thousands. A unexperienced operator (that's me) could ruin a clutch in a day. The hydro lessens the damage potential for folks like me. Besides, they tell me the tractor will have to be split for major repairs to either.
