Also anyone able to post pictures of the hydraulic replacement for the Hydroback cable--as used on the new machines?

No, I really don't know which one PT uses. There have light duty Hydrobacks, and Medium duty Hydrobacks, with cable movement of 2 in, and 3 in. You might be able to cheat and add spacers in the unit, which would compress the springs .

On the 400 series PTs with hydroback cables, there are three grease zerks on the treadle linkage and a couple heim joints. They are supposed to be greased regularly. Is everyone doing that? I do it. One of the advantages of doing that is that it forces you to remove the side of the tunnel covers and clean out all the sticks and clippings. It is also a good time to inspect the hoses that are in there.

Here is our PT425 treadle with hydroback cable. Note the grease zerks and heim joint.

Here is the other side.

There is a total of three zerks and three joints that should be lubed every 8 hours.

Thanks. That is the first time I have seen that valve. Logic tells me that the pedal is operating a lever that sends fluid to the transmission to shift the pump swash plate, which will vary the speed of the wheel motors.

Iinstead of having an external arm on the variable volume pump that is moved by the hydroback cable, the hydraulic fluid from the treadle valve moves some internal mechanism inside the pump.
Here's is a picture of PJ's. The top hose going into the variable volume pump is from the treadle valve.

How come everyones tractor is so clean in the engine compartment? No matter what I do it is full of oil and debris. I think I pull and wash the junk out and it just crawls back in to tick me off...

Do you know the manufacturer of that pump? I see what looks like the letter P, and I can't see the letter beside the P?

It looks so clean because it probably was pressure washed.

Hee hee!!! Because we all took pictures of them when they were new because we know what they'd look like in a few weeks of use! Those pictures are from 2001 and 2003.

I grease the grease fittings every 10 hours, but have not been lubing the heim joints. I guess I should start. I leave the covers off. I don't see that they are needed except for appearance. Is that right.

I removed those covers about five years ago with no problems because of it. I lube the linkage more often because their out in the open. I would also like to come up with a quicker system for removing the floor plates.

I lubed the cable by sliding back the small black cover on the end near the petal. I then worked the cable in and out and kept spraying. I wiped off black gunk occasionally. On the other end I just sprayed into the hydroback cover. I used a Dupont teflon dry multilube. Does anyone put lube in differently? I probably should have taken the cover off the spring, but did not immediately see a way.

We had this special clamp for motorcycle cables, Rubbery thingy clamp that compresses around the opening of the cable. There was a small hole for the spray nozzle to fit in and it pushed the graphite right on down. Used it on motorcross bikes.

Doubt I still have it, not sure if it is still made....

Would that fit on the Hydroback cable. Seems a little small. A good idea though. I will order one if you think it will work. Probably work on the throttle and choke cable.

If I leave the covers off all the grass that blows down the tunnel seems to go up my nose!

Moss, if I could put your nose on my tractor then I would not have to wear a dust mask. Clone it.

I found a company that sells the Hydroback cables locally, and the cost to replace my cable which is 84 in, is about $111.00, and the Hydroback unit is about $65. This was for a Medium Duty, 3 in travel, and 20 lbs. If the cable could be hooked up directly, it would work better. Right now, my foot pedals pull a bracket that pulls or pushes the cable, and the other end also pushes or pulls a bracket that moves the lever on the transmission. Do no not tighten the floating brackets to much, it will add extra lbs to the cable. Just tighten up the bracket and back off about one turn. Those of you that use a pressure washer on the PT, try not to squirt water/soap into the cable assembly.
