How about "Liberty Ship" as it gives you the freedom to go off road?

Did you model the tires, or were they available from a manufacturer's web site.

I am starting the frame and am wondering if 1/8 wall 2x2 square tubing is thick enough or even to thick. What are your thoughts on that.

Did you run Inventor's stress analysis routines? I'm not skilled enough with the software to know how to work that part of the program yet.

Gut feeling is that 1/8" thick is the bare minimum, and 3/16" the maximum. Though I think 3/16" would be overkill. Mind you that's a guess.

The area around the articulation joint and those parts I would do out of 3/16" wall . There is going to be a tremendous amount of force from different angles that the structure needs to deal with.

The rest of the structure I would use 1/8" and double up in areas of higher stress.

Yes I have played around with the stress analysis but not that confident with it.

I planned on making the joint area heavier than the rest. Your right that it will need to be strong. If that fails I'm screwed. It defiantly the most important part of the machine.

I haven't read through 13+ pages but the solution has undoubtedly been mentioned. Just bolt on four wheel motors from a zero turn mower onto an old 2WD ATV. Tuff Torq lists the specs on their web site.

The OP wants to make a hydrostatic ATV that will fit him and his wheelchair into, as such an older ATV wouldn't work except as parts.

That is correct, it's been a while since I've commented on this thread, we've got way past the main design now. We're working on the front suspension system. The best thing that I can think of is to go with an air ride that will serve a dual purpose, of being able to lower the front end and also work as suspension.

It's not a cheap alternative but it should function well.

Have you started building the machine yet? Guess you'll need an air and hydraulic pump.

I'm going to need multiple hydraulic pumps and a small air pump. It's going to be quite complex but I'm hoping it works out fine.

Yes the machine is well on its way, you can see photos of it on my website.

Nice pics. Why the need for multiple hydro pumps?

The air power could be provided by an electric air pump on demand with a small air tank.

Good luck. Very ambitious project.

Have you considered Firestone airbags for your front suspension? They will be more durable in the offroad elements than cylinders. I like your swing arm front suspension design.

I planned on using ride tech airbag suspension. They built a suspension for ATVs that should be for the perfect weight of my machine.

Also the reasoning for multiple pumps is that one pump will run the right side and the other pump or run the left side. Apparently this is common practice with four-wheel-drive machines, they do it for steering purposes.

Very interesting. Yes I imagine the wheels turning at different rates would be an issue.

Your two wheels on the inside of the turn will need to turn slower than on the outside of the turn. But I'm not sure how this is controlled when you use articulated steering. Is there a valve that reduces hydro output pressure to one side as the vehicle turns?

The electronic actuator on the pump will control the flow to each side for each pump. So there doesn't need to be a valve. Just a manifold to control the flow to each motor on each side. I guess theoretically the machine could be steered that way without having a hydraulic ram attached to the articulated steering system.
