An awful lot depends on how much pressure the HST is set for. If you have an HST system that has pressure relief that is XX amount, it's going to hit relief when that pressure is met. A gear drive tractor is not going to stop at that point, but keep trying until the wheels are spinning. Of course, once the wheels are spinning, it makes no difference, but the wheels may not spin until you've gotten a little more done than you would have with the HST.
This is rather hypothetical, and some posters will state they don't hit relief that often when working, but I have.
I like both HST and shuttle shifts. There are times when both have the advantage, and obviously, it would be ideal if one could have both. I'd love a tractor that was mixed. I could use HST for those loading tasks, and mowing, and then when I want to do some serious plowing or pulling out trees etc. I could switch it over to shuttle, overriding the relief limitation.
I wouldn't think of getting rid of my HST tractor, but I'll probably add a shuttle shift tractor for those other jobs.
