They were outside. You were inside behind presumably locked doors. Ignoring that you weren't even aware of the burglary until the next morning; if you were to shoot somebody, what exactly would you be defending yourself against?

I woke up, went out side, found someone in my vehicle. That person got out and confronted me with a knife.
I have SDF should I need it

The one thing that stands clear to me in any self defense situation is to immediately call my attorney. His advice has always been don稚 say a word till it has been discussed with him. Having been in the situation and knowing how easy it once was for the system to turn it around on you I will take that advise.

Simply put the answer to the police would be
Thats the gun I used to defend myself over there
This is my name
This is my home and property which I have every right to be on.
You will receive my statement after I talk with my attorney

Good advice... I walked that road once...

If you don't want to keep a big dog around, consider a recording. It might be a deterrent from actually losing something, if they break a window and it sets off the sound of a dog barking in the house.

Also effective against travelling salesmen and Jehovah Witnesses.

If you don't want visitors, just post at the end of the driveway, "Jehovah Witnesses salesman here, Welcome."

Just remember that if you get cameras, they will record what the burglar did and is doing and, if you confront the burglar, they will also record what you did or didn't do. The first thing the cops will do after disarming you and seeing the cameras is ask for the recorder. It makes their job much easier. I used to own a business and we had cameras everywhere. I would catch an alarming number of employees stealing. When confronted, they would always, always, always lie. Then I'd show them the video. It never lied.

Crooks do strange things. No place is safe from them. Just make it difficult for them to achieve their goals and perhaps they will target an easier mark.

I don't want to confront, or have to shoot anyone. All I want is want to live in peace. Someone doesn't want me to live in peace.

I agree.

The key to a good defense is a strong offense.

Sorry you were robbed.

We’ve had some car break ins recently in our rural town. Punks from Hartford steal a car, come out to rural towns and rob cars which are usually unlocked. One of my neighbors is a CT State Trooper. His wife’s car was robbed overnight while his cruiser was parked next to it! I can’t believe they did that!

This is not aimed at the OP per say.

Getting robbed is a disturbing emotional experience. It sucks. BTDT, got a couple of tee shirts.

One needs to put the emotions in a box and be rational, which is not easy.

Let say someone is stealing your car and one uses deadly force to prevent the theft. If the case goes to court, civil and/or criminal, how long will the value of the car being exceeded by lawyer fees? If the car has insurance and is stolen, even with a high deductible, one will be better off money wise just letting the car go. Not easy on the emotions though.

Back in around 1990 in South FLA, a man came home from work and found a thief stealing his TV set. The thief ran from the apartment with the TV and the owner shot the thief in the back and killed him. State law at the time said one COULD use deadly force to prevent a burglary. In spite of the law, the local DA filed charges against the owner. :confused3: Eventually, the owner was found not guilty but his lawyer bill had to be far in excess of the price of that TV. Heck, I bet I could go to the dump today and the same size or larger TV for free. Using deadly force for a TV set or a car is just not worth the aggravation. I wonder what the owner would have paid to NOT have to go to court and/or worry about going to prison for decades?

I happened to talk to an officer involved in the investigation. The irony was the pistol the owner used would shoot right, or shoot left, but not straight. The owner was "lucky" to hit the thief and not an innocent bystander.

A few years ago in a rural NC county, an elderly man found a guy trying to drive off in his car. The car owner shot and killed the thief. No way the current law allowed that use of force and I figured the owner was going to get charged and set to prison. There was no legal justification for what he did. However, the local DA did not press charges because he knew he could not get a conviction in the county in spite of the law. :D

Later,
Dan

First, they had a knife. I have mentioned this several times. That is enough here for self defense.

Second, Where I live, there is only county deputies. There are only two to cover the entire county over night.
If I call, and they are tied up on another call. It may be the next day before they arrive.

So here, it's up to you to defend yourself. Unless, you get lucky and the deputy that covers your side of the county isn't tied up on another call

Oh, and I have live stock. I'm guessing They were in the back of the property asleep, and never saw,or heard anything.

kenmac . . . my bull is a very light sleeper . . . ;) He is always ready for anything romantic . . .
