I can't believe they did it !

Years ago my insurance agent said it's 3am...you hear glass breaking...you grab your pistol and flashlight. In living room window is shattered. Going outside someone is walking down your driveway carrying your TV set.
Do you shoot him/her in the back?
Call police when police arrive 10 minutes later the perp is long gone.
Do you confront them? They pose no threat.
I've thought what I would do many times. I would have to know in that split second we were in danger. Walking away is not danger.
Thirty years ago we had a break in the barn. About $1K stolen new drag car parts. I never knew until next day.
Months later the guy was caught. Detective said the guy showed him 30+ places he robbed. What was strange was this was a college kid...no drugs. He said it was an adrenaline rush, an addiction.
Later we got a big dog, but that became a nuisance.

Ernie, being a 40 year military guy the homeowner made several critical mistakes. Those can be analyzed by anyone reading the account.

A decision has to be made. Defense. Offense. Once that decision is made secondary decisions have to be made. The list becomes extensive. It's very easy to get confused about the intent.

In my opinion the homeowner decided to go Offense. And then he did it in an irrational manner.

Once Offense was chosen the outcome is solely dependent on the decision the offenders make. I contend they thought anyone inept enough to expose themselves was of little threat.

The age, race, economic status, or any other category that you choose to put the offenders in is irrelevant.

If you pull a gun be prepared to live with the results.

ovrszd . . . someone gets the ding, ding, ding . . . .:drink:

If you don't want to keep a big dog around, consider a recording. It might be a deterrent from actually losing something, if they break a window and it sets off the sound of a dog barking in the house.

Also effective against travelling salesmen and Jehovah Witnesses.

If your going to go outside with a gun at least do it with a bag of garbage so you can say your where taking the garbage out and heard a noise.

Shoot him with a paintball gun and then the cops know who to look for and you're not charged with murder.

First, they had a knife. I have mentioned this several times. That is enough here for self defense.

Second, Where I live, there is only county deputies. There are only two to cover the entire county over night.
If I call, and they are tied up on another call. It may be the next day before they arrive.

So here, it's up to you to defend yourself. Unless, you get lucky and the deputy that covers your side of the county isn't tied up on another call

Oh, and I have live stock. I'm guessing They were in the back of the property asleep, and never saw,or heard anything.

Not necessarily. Some newer cameras are very high quality. But he may get alerts all night long that mean nothing. Coons, cats, bats, deer, and we even shown a spider building a web across the front of the lens. After a while we didn't pay attention to all the alerts. Which isn't good either.

I added 4 driveway alerts that cover all four sides of my house. Easily adjustable to stop nuisance alarms and we always look when one goes off. We also have 8 security cameras that provide a panorama view of the entire place. We also have a buried driveway alarm that senses the metal of a vehicle and is not motion activated. By using lithium batteries, systems work even in the dead of winter.

The one thing that stands clear to me in any self defense situation is to immediately call my attorney. His advice has always been don’t say a word till it has been discussed with him. Having been in the situation and knowing how easy it once was for the system to turn it around on you I will take that advise.

Simply put the answer to the police would be
Thats the gun I used to defend myself over there
This is my name
This is my home and property which I have every right to be on.
You will receive my statement after I talk with my attorney

They were outside. You were inside behind presumably locked doors. Ignoring that you weren't even aware of the burglary until the next morning; if you were to shoot somebody, what exactly would you be defending yourself against?
