Ernie, being a 40 year military guy the homeowner made several critical mistakes. Those can be analyzed by anyone reading the account.

A decision has to be made. Defense. Offense. Once that decision is made secondary decisions have to be made. The list becomes extensive. It's very easy to get confused about the intent.

In my opinion the homeowner decided to go Offense. And then he did it in an irrational manner.

Once Offense was chosen the outcome is solely dependent on the decision the offenders make. I contend they thought anyone inept enough to expose themselves was of little threat.

The age, race, economic status, or any other category that you choose to put the offenders in is irrelevant.

If you pull a gun be prepared to live with the results.
That's the wisest statement I've seen in a long time.

edit: We can sit here and analyze all that we want. In a real situation there is no time to think. And when you go from sound asleep to full adrenaline mode in a matter of seconds...

That's the wisest statement I've seen in a long time.

My wife used to work at a Pharmacy. She asked me one time if I thought she should get a concealed carry license. I said can you point your pistol at someone's face and pull the trigger until it clicks? She said no I don't think I can. I said then you shouldn't carry, all you are going to do is arm the offender.

Glad I know my sheriff and district attorney on a first name basis.

Also Glad I live in Texas. I don't believe there's a rural country grand jury here that would indict him. Maybe a few down in deep south Texas.

If you call 911 first reporting someone trespassing, keep in mind that if you head out to investigate on your own that police are (or should be) coming. If you are armed, how will that appear to those arriving ?
New York's take on Castle stinks. No defending property, and you need to take every avenue of retreat before defending. I'd really rather not have to defend myself in a corner.

The person /person's that got into my vehicle had a knife and had it out for some reason. If they didn't have it out, it wouldn't have been left in my front seat when they left.
What was their intent having the knife out ? If I had gone out would they have attacked me with the knife /
Guess we'll never know.
But, I do know they put themselves at great risk, and they must have known by having their knife out.

They won this round. If they, or someone else returns, I will win that round.

My fear now is, they go tell their friends that they know of a place that you can go, get into vehicles and owners will never know.

After installing these alert cameras, they will be very surprised . when they see me, and know their friend lied to them .

Id be surprised if he would get indicted down there.

Kenmac. Leave things out as bait. Let them get taken you get the pictures and let the police handle the rest.

We have a piece of property 3hrs away wr just bought this year. I consider everything there (locked up or no) bait. I have trail cameras all over.

A pharmacy is quite possibly one of the worst places to work. My wife use to work at one. The trash and drug addicts that would come in there. Every day people would bring in fake prescriptions and try to skeam there drug of choice.

Yep. Druggies so strung out they'd open the bottles and take pills at the counter. Sometimes spilling them on the floor. I understood her concern. Told her to never defend the store, just get out of the way.

Be 100% sure you know the laws for using deadly force in your state. In many, shooting someone that was only there to rob outside your home is not justifiable homicide. Personally I think it should be, but it isnt. Know your laws.

The real question here is what is most important? Is is living or confronting and teaching the bad guy a lesson? If it is living, you should already have an intruder plan that does include calling the police and getting to a safe place in your home that is easily defended with your weapon (s) of choice. You need EVERY advantage you can get. This isnt a movie.
Now if you dont really care about living then by all means go out and confront the burglar and roll the dice. You may very well win, but remember you have to live with the consequences (criminal, civil, psychological). IMO confronting is a last resort and only an option if I have other people in the house and the intruder has blocked my access to that side of the home.

The LAST thing you should do is get a camera alert and go outside armed with a gun. I know this is counter intuitive to the male ego (I have one myself) but every self defense instructor that has any real gun fighting experience will tell you this. When you go to the danger, YOU are escalating the situation. Yes I know they are on your property...but it is NOT self-defense at that point. At least it isn't by default and you will have to prove it was.

You may also want to consider motion lights and a nice big dog.
