I agree with all of you. The county I live in was very rural up until ten years ago. There are still residents in the county who don't lock their doors and don't understand why they get things stolen. It is very sad that they cannot do what they used to do, but the theives are everywhere. There is an intermodal going in and where the RR purchased all the land and houses thieves are going in and just stripping the houses clean. I understand some people get laid off, but come on there are plenty of other jobs out there where people can make an honest living. Way too many people are lazy and have no respect for others. If I catch a thief I plan on using a taser to make them suffer until the police arrive. Too bad we are not like some countries and if you catch a thief they lose a hand(s). I bet that would slow them down. ;)

What gets me is the cushy jails. How about hard labor, put these people to work which could cover the costs of keeping them in jail.

Be very very careful doing that, still alive pissed off criminals can sue! And unfortunately often win:( When I was still carrying a badge we believed it was better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 ;)

Also consider the generational side of it, the parents are worthless thieves so the kids start earlier & are more aggressive about it. They just don't care (about you or themselves)!

the problem of theft is worse because of Democrats? seriously, that is the stupidest thing I've ever read on this site. Come on man. this is not a political thing.

Also, be careful if you catch a thief in action, I had a roommate in college who caught a thief inside his car, stealing his stereo equipment. He clocked the thief with a baseball bat, tied him up until the cops came. The thief got off with a misdemeanor and a bloody nose - my roommate went to jail for many months.

The cops have something they call a 'throw down' ........ i'm confident i could come up with something like that around my house somewhere.

Deadbolts aren't worth a dam* either. My house was broken into about a month ago. They stole a laptop computer, some cash, and some cameras.
It was real easy, so I am going to tell you how they did it, so be forewarned and add a steel shield around the deadbolt. You think that steel door with wood inside is secure, think again. I tried this myself on another scrap door, and it works. They used a screw driver to jam behind the deadbolt and the steel part of the door. They then pried down and bent the metal inward around the lock until they could see the latch. They then rotated the whole assembly until the deadbolt was clear, and opened the door. I don't mind killing thief's who are inside the house, or on my property. I think the law now states that the owner can protect their property and home with whatever. I am thinking that the drug users across the street, told someone about what time I go to work and return, and split the profits.

In my 9 to 5 life I own a commercial door and hardware distributorship. We supply everything electronic and mechanical that relates to commercial, industrial man doors. Regardless of how high-tech or simply built, thieves are way ahead of technology. I see the majority of break-ins occuring at the point of least resistance in all buildings, typically windows. If they see an armed door and no windows to access they just sawzall through a wood framed wall. I see alot of car ramming of doors in the back of shopping plazas. I personally have biometric"thumbprint scan" readers on all of my doors at home tied in with 8" mortise lock and mortise deadbolts. My large safe is biometric read as well.

If they can get past my dogs I guess they can have my stuff. If they really want in they will find a way.
