I was thinking about getting a motorcycle

When I wrecked 30 years ago, helmet wasn't fastened, scull was fractured and other broken bones. Always wondered if it had stayed on, might it have broken my neck since I ended up under metal guard rails. People who saw wreck said I shouldn't be here. I never found that helmet! ( think my wife threw it away!) O, I'm riding again now. Bought my 3rd old goldwing today!

You are lucky. I see that you have to wear a helmet in WV. Only Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire have no motorcycle helmet laws.

On a more serious note, I am surprised by the number of folks who ride without helmets in SC, where the state law requires helmets only for those 17 or younger.

I guess I am ambivalent as to whether helmets should be required -- people should be able to make their own decisions as long as they do no harm to others. But I suspect that society is picking up the tab for at least some of those folks when they have an accident.

Ohio also has a no helmet policy....and the # of helmetless riders is at least 5 to 1 here.

So if I understand it correctly, there's no organ shortage in Ohio? Just foolin with you. I'm not a big fan of mandatory anything that is there simply to protect us from ourselves.

I don't agree with helmet or seatbelt laws, as they impede on my personal freedom. I do, however, wear my full face helmet when I ride, just as I also wear my seatbelt when I drive.

I'd like to use my organs for a few more years!

Last Friday, I had to take a guy from work home...
The reason...he and I had gone to a supplier for a source inspection. After that, we were going to stop at a local gun shop. Since both of us were going to our respective homes afterwards, I was in my pickup, he was on his BMW motorcycle.
He had pulled out from the side street and got hit on the rear by a man coming around a blind curve (too fast would be my guess).

Well, the motorcycle was probably totalled. The co-worker was wearing a helmet and kevlar riding suit which probably kept him out of the hospital.

So, moral of the story is dress to ride and dress to fall.

Taxpayers pay out a lot in medicaid - people with brain injuries frequently need long term care, and few have insurance for it. So basically, most end up being a burden on the taxpayers.

Lots of speculation there, I'd be interested in the stats. I tend to believe that folks without a brain bucket tend to spill them everywhere, and end up costing less. People with helmets could actually end up costing more because they die less, but are still exposed to serious spinal and internal injuries, concussive brain trauma, etc. But that's also just an opinion.

I'd never ride on the roads without a helmet (sometimes putt around the yard on my quad without one), but generally don't support helmet laws. As scoutcub mentioned, no lid is the norm in Ohio...by a huge margin.

According to the web site I linked earlier, Ohio and Florida are like several other states in that they require helmets only for younger riders. Apparently Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire are the only states that have no helmet laws regardless of age.
