But what if it's daylight and rainy the next time you get in? You do what works for you, I'll do what works for me.
Might as well just put black tape on the sensor to have them on all the time then. Instead of a glove on the dash.

I have got much much more cautious as I have got older. At a 4-way stop I hesitate for a second or so to make sure I don't have a collision. And when I have a grand in the car I am super cautious. I tell everybody that I'm the old man in the right lane doing 5-mph slower than the limit but really, I'm the one only doing 5-mph over.

For most vehicles with the automatic sensor, it can be recalibrated to come on sooner. Ask you service person. I have the software to get into trucks software. Have adjusted it to come on sooner. Also designated the front turn signals to DRL's. Replaced the bulbs with LED's and turned off the light out reminder, by changing to LED setting. JM2C.

Boy that idea never came up in my discussions with service technicians in the past.

I don't miss manual lights at all. One of the first cars that I learned to drive on had automatic headlight turn off when the ignition was off. It seemed like such a brilliant idea, all for a $0.47 relay, and the lack of it seemed to be a great measure of the contempt that vehicle designers have/had for owners. I never bought a vehicle afterwards without it. Too easy to lose a battery, and that isn't a $0.47 mistake.

One car just had issues with its automatic light system, and it drove me nuts. Shade from a tree or an overpass would put it in night mode and the dash would disappear. I used electrical tape on the sensor to keep it on, and just turned the dash lighting brighter or dimmer as needed. It still turned the lights off when the car turned off and the doors opened.

I've never been keen on owning dark colored vehicles either due to the lack of visibility to others.

All the best,

Peter

Cautious doesn't mean old it just means being a realist.
Sitting at a redlight It finally changed.
I noticed a service van coming from the right at speed.
I just pulled ahead several feet and stopped.
If I had kept going he would have T boned my vehicle for sure.
I blared my horn as he flew by, I'm guessing 45mph in a 30, and he just looked over at me totally oblivious to running a mature red light.
You not only have to watch out for what you are doing but also anticipate what others around you might do.
The biggest change in the last 20 years is the F'n phones.
My GPS can tell me where I am in the world, how fast I'm going or even if I've crossed the center line.
They can't build that into the phone so it shuts off when the vehicle is moving?

How do you do that? Do you need one of those pricey scan tools?
I'd love to adjust the sensitivity on my truck. Cloudy day or park in the shade and headlights come on. This time of year with the sun so low in the sky it might be 15 min. before it realizes it isn't dark outside.

I know there's something around for Fords, even a crib sheet to make navigating it easier, is there something similar for GMs?
