Tractor
JD 4400
Finished Bush hogging, went back next day and the tractor started hydraulics worked, but wouldn't go forward or backwards. Hydrostatic trans, all fluid levels were ok, also PTO wouldn't engage. Wondering if it is the torsional dampef. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am assuming you are referring to your JD 4400 and the "IF" is a typo. First thing I would look at is that other obvious stuff. Play around with the range selector a little bit and make sure your not in N accidentally. Next thing I would do is crawl under where the linkage is for the hydro pedals. It should be pretty easy to track the linkage all the way back to the transmission. Make sure that is all working properly. While underneath there check the PTO linkage as well.

Is the tractor still running properly when you try to do these tasks or does the tractor wants to shut down??

Checked linkage, hydro pedals and is not in neutral, Underneath there is a small opening a piece found apiece of rubber hanging down. Was a typo JD 4400 compact tractor.

Just out of curiosity is the power steering working? That is the first thing the charge pump goes to before it heads back to the Hydro trans.

Power Steering is working, took to dealership it is the Torsional Damper. Must be made of Gold Tri Green quoted a price for the part of $1600.00 for the part and $1000.00 labor. Thanks for responding to my question.

I appreciate you letting me know what the issue is. I had to look up on the parts catalog what a torsional damper even was to be honest. The tech manuals I have are very vague about them. Looks like nothing more then a big clutch plate between the flywheel and the hydro trans.

Had to research what it does and all it said was it acted as a damper for vibration between the trans and the engine. Was there any excessive vibration or any cues that the thing was about to go out? I'm just kind of curious because my 4310 power-reverser and 4400 hydro both have that same exact part in them.

The one positive out of all this I guess is that as soon as you split the tractor its right there. At least you don't have to go digging deeper into it to get it.

There was no excessive vibration or anything out of the ordinary. This is according to my son-in-law who had borrowed the tractor. Went to another JD Dealer found the part for 850 plus tax, picked up my tractor and will not return to Tri Green. Now it looks like a 1500 repair. Here's hoping you never experience that problem. Thanks Max

It definitely pays to shop around a bit and go on JD parts catalog and see what they list the part for.

My closest dealership wants almost 10 dollars for a quart of Hy-gard trans fluid and the larger dealership about 50 miles away charges 68.00 for 5 gallons. On top of that they deliver to a drop site which is a farm that is only about 8 miles from my house.

I own 11 acres with my house on it and have a BX2360 so 23hp Kabota and I wouldn’t want anything bigger for what I use it for. I cut the grass, clear a 300 foot driveway, move firewood for the boiler, keep trails clean, mow ditches, and landscape with it.

This summer I moved over 60,000 lbs of rock with it, and about 5 cord of wood. Anything larger wouldn’t fit in my woods and would destroy my yard mowing. I can keep it in the shed or 3rd garage stall in winter for quick access.

I guess it’s totally situational dependent on what you plain on doing. I also made jumps for my kids dirt bikes and smoothed the grade to the river making access easier for the kids. Are there times I could use a larger loader yes, but only to speed things up if I can get to the location needed. I looked at Kubota B which is larger then the BX but I wouldn’t trust my sons or wife finishing mowing the yard with it.

So I could have bought a larger tractor for less and a mower and maintain two pieces of equipment that in the end would cost the same or more. As a nice mower and less expensive tractor would cost more then one machine. So to each there own, I’m not a farmer either, and don’t plan to ever do row crops on such a small acreage.

Mainly use my jd 4400 for bush hogging, flail mowing and disking for my hunting club. We are hoping for rain so we can plant our fields, no rain in the last 23 days and not forecasted until middle of October. Thanks for responding to my post.

Just thought I would add my daughter received her Master's from the University Of Michigan in An Arbor . You may be a Michigan State Fan, here in Alabama you are either a Alabama Fan or Auburn. FWIW

I'm not so much a fan of either but I do support them. To be honest I'm an ND fan and still embarrassed from the beating the Tide gave us in the national championship some years back.
