Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

thank you rmorgan.
as some one who comes from a hispanic background and has a college degree and speaks and read english i do take some offense to some of the things said here today. i realize much of it is in jest but come on guys lets get with the program. it is not 1776 and we are still a country for the masses.

i agree that immigrents should speak and read english. i myself thing english should be the official language of this country. i cant believe how upset people are getting with someone who just moved to this country that is not completely fluent yet. i am very impressed with anyone that has been here for less than a year and can communicate at all! however i am very dissapointed with all who are here for more than 3 years and can not communicate.

another good example to add to the one about mexico. japan a country with less then 1% minorites living in that country at any one time.....they do not allow more than 1 million non-japanese to live in the country this is including us military have signs in kanji, romanji and sometime in english. now i am not sayig that you should be able to take your driving exam in 87 different languages as you can in NY, but come on lets get out of the dark ages.

oh might i add that i do not sit behind the minority shield when applying for a job, loan, ect. infact if my last name wasnt lopez i dont think anyone would have a clue! so dont forget that many of the majority pick out the minorities before they even meet them....so why should they take their time to live up to your standards if you wont even give them the opportunity to make if past the first round of anything.

Cowboydoc – I agree and have stated my opinion on this earlier. See the thread “More gripes! (sorry)”

Gary – I didn’t know that Indiana has already adopted English as it’s official language. Are you sure about that? If it’s true, then what does that mean exactly? I still get the “press 1 for English, press 2 for Spanish” message on some ATMs here in Indiana. Does this law mean that all government offices phone numbers will be in English?

kokopelli2 – Don’t take offense, we’re not talking about people like you, we’re talking about the ones who come here and want to reap all the benefits without giving back. They have no desire to become Americans, they just want to come here and make money and send it back to their families in other countries. That type of stuff weakens the American economy. If we have ATM’s and phone messages in both languages, then there will be no motivation for people to learn English.

I’ll bet the moderators delete this thread before the end of the day. It’s not politically correct to say anything derogatory about minority policies in this country.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I traveled to Europe quite a bit in the last few years and anyone that has traveled knows that English is the language of business. Why is it that foreigns countries accept English but the immigrants that move to the USA cannot? We waste billions so that we don't offend anyone!

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Living in Texas, one gets a LOT of exposure to Mexican culture. For the most part, it has enriched the lives of those living here. But I also have a major problem with those who refuse to learn English. Just last week, I went to look at a property in an area of Dallas known as "Little Mexico" - a restaurant. There were about 11 employees there, including the manager. None spoke English. I know enough broken Spanish to communicate with them, but I have the feeling that some of these people have lived here all their life. They go to public schools that are pressured to graduate them, all the while they are speaking Spanish at home, with their friends, etc. Many drop out of school, because they simply do not understand English and have no desire to learn it. And unfortunately, many end up on welfare because they do not have the language skills to get a decent job in the Caucasion world. The local government voice mail/phone answering messages all have Spanish instructions as well as English. Just so many can get their welfare checks or government benefits, and many of course are illegal aliens. There are no easy solutions to this problem. Tightening the borders and cracking down on public schools and the way they hold someone's hand for 10 or 12 years just to get them out of there is a start.

BTW - One of my best friends is Hispanic, and two of my grandchildren are too.

Danny, here is the law.

BURNS INDIANA STATUTES

The English language is adopted as the official language of the state of Indiana.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Here ya go Doc;
A van carrying illegal immigrants and driving the wrong way with its headlights off crashed into a sports utility vehicle, killing at least six people and injuring more than 20, authorities said.

The accident was reported at about 9 p.m. PDT Monday on Interstate 8 in the El Cajon area, about 50 miles east of San Diego, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Authorities said motorists saw the wrong-way driver heading west in eastbound lanes. The van's headlights were apparently off, probably to evade a Border Patrol checkpoint, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Lopez.

The van struck two cars before it slammed head-on into the sports utility vehicle. The SUV driver was killed and a female passenger was seriously injured, authorities said.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I don't think any of the posts were "picking on minorities". In my area there are bunches of educational opportunities for immigrant education. Most of the immigrants around here just don't think they need to take the time to learn. Their attitude is that their kid goes to school here, let him/her translate. One interesting thing. I lived in Florida a couple of years. They had an illegal immigrant problem. Most of those illegal immigrants were from Europe. They all were fluent in English and had education and saleable skills. When they were caught by the INS it was out the door, no appeal, no amnesty program every three or four years. Is this fair? Either kick 'em all out or give amnesty to everyone irregardless of their race religion or national origin. In theory, that's the way it's supposed to be.

8NTX - I lived in Houston for 2 years. It was very irritating to go into a K-Mart or other store and ask an associate which isle something is in - only to have them give me a blank stare because they couldn't understand a word I said!

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I'm involved in litigation right now with a Hispanic couple over a deficiency balance on a lease agreement they broke. The reason they walked away from the lease was their child wnet into the hospital and those medical bills and the lease payments together exceeded their budget. This is what they told me at the time.

While unfortunate, I have a family to take care of as well and followed the law here by liquidating the property at public sale then getting a judgment for the deficiency balance. The husband actually signed an "Agreed Judgment" and agreed to make payments.

When the first agreed payment is due I get notice they are now represented by counsel who claims they "didn't understand" either the lease agreement or the Agreed Judgment because of their lack of education in English. As to their lack of understanding English, I can say they certainly negotiated the dollars proficiently enough

I have no sign saying "Hablamos Espanol" outside my building. I treated these people as I do everyone and I dealt with them as I do everyone - in English. I answered questions and negotiated in good faith. Now I'm to be penalized for that.

Yet consider the flip side. Consider my situation if I had said, "I'm sorry, but I don't want to deal with you because you're Hispanic (or Bosnian or whatever) and I'm not sure you are capable of comprehending what you're doing here." I'm guessing I'd have heard from more than a couple different agencies over that one.

I'm actually more than willing to give up the money I'm owed if only I could bet a clear definition of what test I have to give before I can do business with someone. I know the minimum age. Is there a maximum? How about eduction? HS? GED? College? Which major? If not born and raised in the US, how long living here before I can deal with them? I know this sounds flip, but I'm tired of excuses like this being used as a weapon against me.

I doubt it very seriously. It's a great example of what tractor power is all about. We could say you and me are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. You consider me a bleeding heart liberal and I have to believe by some of your posts on this subject that you're a whiner.

But I'll bet the donut against the hole that on tractor stuff and just plain making things we'd be like peas in a pod.

What we have in common is a lot bigger than the small stuff that involves PC (politeness and being considerate, something both of us learned on grandma's knee).

So this thread is a demonstration of tractor power. That what brings us together is greater than what could keep us apart.

I guess what we need to do is have some of these IT geniuses develop a program that automatically translates from yiddish to arabic. Then TBN could do in the middle east what no one has ever even come close to solving.
