Bird – “brother, Jeb, who's married to an Hispanic wife”.
You’re probably right. I just heard someone talking about it a couple of years ago and probably got it wrong.

wroughtn_harv -
“fifteen percent FICA … never ask for it back”
There are plenty of wages being paid in cash. Plus, the issue here is whether or not people who live in the USA care about the USA and are here to help keep the USA strong. No one likes a freeloader.

“The only ones that are hurt by not speaking english are the ones not speaking english”
This is not true. A perfect example is when I would go into a store in Houston, TX and not being able to get help from an associate because he could not understand and/or speak English. This was not a rare occurrence in Houston.

“removing the immigrants”
I’m not opposed to immigration, just more control over foreigners who come here and use the system for their gain and making derogatory remarks about my country.

“debacles of 9-11”
Allowed because of lax policies toward foreigners.

Like I’ve said in other posts, I’m not prejudice and I’m not against diversity. My best friend in college was a Mexican guy who used to clean my clock in tennis all the time. In order to defend our freedom and remain strong, this country needs to remain united and if we have several different languages going around, we will not be "united".

My exact sentiments Bob. If they want to come here and be Americans and adopt American ways and speak English great. But if you want to come here and practice your ways and make this country like your country go home!

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Couple things Harv.

First if you don't have an official language then the school system or your own business for that matter can be sued to implement "other" languages. In Gary's case he is being penalized because the person did not understand what was going on. Or take Danny that can't get instructions to where an item is in the store because the store was dumb enough to hire someone that didn't speak english.

Next take that another step and in most towns Walmart is the only gig going. How are we going to not shop Walmart even if you can't understand what they are saying?

As far as trade goes I think that's a mute issue. You've got billion dollar deficits in trade how do you think that equates? We're already seeing corporation after corporation go overseas. You keep these jobs here and give them to people so they can $15 and hour instead of $5 an hour and people will be able to afford American made items. It's all trickle down. You either make the wages so that a person can afford to have an american company stay here with products made by american workers or you send the production overseas and let's just give people minimum wage jobs so all they can afford is "made in China" products.

I guess it comes down to do you want this country to look like Mexico or any other country for that matter. No thanks for me I like this country the way that it is. You keep going the way we are though and we will be a broke and broken down country no doubt.

kokopelli,
Look at the messages. I don't think anyone here has a problem with a person coming her legally and making a go of it. You want to BE an american great.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Actually, as far as going into a store where all the clerks speak Spanish, it is pretty obvious (1) that there is no government involvement, and (2) that retailer--Wal Mart or whoever, has made a business decision that it is more important for them to staff their store with people who speak Spanish than people who speak English: Sounds like a clear example of the American free market system at work!! Should there be legislation that nobody can hire anybody to work in retail who doesn't speak English, or should the rest of us maybe learn a little Spanish? Sounds like Wal Mart's answer to that question would be the latter.

That's not true. In my case the person is attempting to dupe the court using their now-worse-than-ever English as an excuse to escape their commitments in a valid contract.

Everything was fine until they had an unexpected expense arise making it difficult for them to make the payments to which they had agreed. The penalty for me at this point is having to go through all of this with the courts and burn time I should be able to use for something else. We'll see what transpires in the court later.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

When I was in high school there were a lot of Laosian families being settled in our area. Their kids were sent to public school where 1/2 their day was spent learning english and the other half instructed in their native language.

I remember one kid who refused to speak to his friends unless they spoke to him in english. He would stand ramrod straight and say "NO! NO! You speak english! Me American now!" His friends would all laugh at him and call him "Yankee" and "GI Joe". Out of the 50 or so Laosian students in my senior class he was the only one who graduated and one of only a few who could speak english beyond the basics.

If you owned a software company would you hire a computer programer who only knew BASIC and had no interest in learning the computer language used to make your product?

You can believe that if you want. I’ll be more realistic and conclude that they hire whoever they can find willing to work for the low wages they pay. All of use learning a little Spanish is not a solution either. What’s next, Japanese? Then, French, German, etc. Being an engineer, I prefer to do things efficiently and this country will operate much more efficiently if the citizens all speak the same language.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

What I meant Gary was that because we even allow the possibility that you may not understand English then it can be used as a defense to get out of a legal contract. I didn't necessarily mean that they didn't understand English but they pretended they didn't later on to get out of a contract. From what I understood from your post you had already won a judgment against them and then it was stopped because they didn't understand the legal wording of the original contract.

Now certainly I couldn't go in and use that argument. There should not be special rights to a person because they didn't understand the contract and then signed it anyway.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

wroughten_harv,

Thanks for this post. I was going to jump into this discussion a couple of times, but I would not have been able to express this nearly as cogently as did you.

One thing that strikes me is the apparent assumption that there is a single "American" culture. I don't see that as true or even desireable. When I was a kid, there were still pockets of REAL hillbillies in the mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. I hope there still are. I hope there are Maine fishermen whose spoken language I'd have difficulty understanding. I'm pretty sure there are still cajuns in south Louisiana who cling to their own culture. I have gone to native American gatherings where preservation of the language and customs was considered important. Maybe we're just discussing what entails reasonable variations? Who gets to decide what's reasonable?

The English language needs no government defense.

Chuck
