Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

For those suffering from White Guilt, a certificate of absolution is available from Ken Hamblin, Denver radio talk show host.
When I was growing up in the Rochester NY area, 55 years ago, the city was pretty much divided by ethnic region. In the 1960s, it was not at all uncommon to hear a police call with the dispacher clearly stating "we need an Italian speaking officer on this one". Fortunately, back then, about 1/3 of the force was 1st generation American born Italians.
There was also Deutchtown, Ukie Town, Polock town, Lithoanian town, and Jewtown along with 2 Italian areas one on each side of the city.
I clearly remember riding the us with my mother and listening to Italian being spoken by the older women. Since we had Italian neighbors, I learned Italian by the time I was 4 and spoke it equally as well as I spoke English at that time in my life.
Our family moved to the country when I was 5, mainly because my Old Man detested the "Dago" invasion of Deutchtown, and was determined to get away from them "Greaseballs". Interestingly, we moved to a town that detested Italians because it had been the site of a POW camp for Italians during the second World War.
Growing up, I don't think I really worried much about the ethnicity of my genetics, although I suppose I finally figured out I'm a mongrel.
In 1964, Rochester came apart during the first batch of riots when a large part of the Jewish business district was burned. The northern end of the riot and destruction was determined by a self delegated collection of first generation immigrants, Poles, and Ukrane, who were damned if their neighborhoods were going to be invaded and burned. The majority of these people had seen their part of Europe destroyed, and were going to make sure their part of America wasn't.
These were people who had come to America with little more than the clothes on their backs, and had built a life. They hadn't collected a dime of welfare, and probably would have starved to death before they asked for a penny.
Today's "immigrant" is a different story. Since Lyndon Johnson inaugurated the Great Society and AFDC, this country has become a target. Pregnant women from around the world arrive in the US hopeing to deliver here so the kid will have US citizenship, and they will be able to bring the rest of the family over either thru the generoscity of a misguided liberal, or thru welfare handouts. Hordes of liberal nitwits suffering guilt from their misgotten gains line up to "help" these immigrants.
Our immigration laws have been completely rendered impotent, unless the immigrant is a Canadian. The sponsorship requirement for new immigrants has been ignored by beurocrats for 20 years. INS is and is known worldwide as a joke agency. Welfare departments refuse to cooperate with any division of law enforcment. Hundreds of people get off airplanes every week at JFK completely without documents, and the dipsticks at immigration admit them with a smile and a promice to report to some hearing 9 months later. They get issued a temporary SS number, and are directed to the nearest welfare office. Who in he!! actually believes a person got onto an airliner to the US from anyplace in the world without documentation?
The whole [censored] system is a joke.
The agriculture system in this country will collapse without alien workers, documented or undocumented, as will a lot of other industrys. Americans born here flat refuse to work, why should they when they can sit on welfare and eat well, and live in a decent house, with phone and cable TV off the sweat of some other fool's brow.
The generations that immigrated to this country and built it have seen their dream perverted and prostituted by the politicians, of bothe partys. The current public "education" system is a joke. If dollars per student meant anything to how students performed, the brightest graduates in the US would be coming from Washington, DC. Anybody want to suggest they are?
The problem isn't the immigrants, it's the government!

Franz, you are so right. here in Northwest Arkansas Many Mexicans work in the poultry industry "Tyson Foods". Also many work in Southwest Arkansas in the mellon and tomatoe fields. It is nasty "stoop labor" . The native whites and blacks refuse to do this type of work at minimum wages. Without the Mexican labor force, legal or otherwise, the econy of this state would suffer.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Well written. Thank you for your insight. I don't believe we need a law to establish english as the official language, however we don't need to cater to all the other languages as my state of Oregon does.

Every voters pamplet is printed in alot of languages beside spanish, but then you would expect that from "The Peoples Republic of Oregon."

I retired from over 30 years service in the Army and proud to have served. I guess I am a bit narrow minded on the subject of English as our nations language. Our nation needs a commond language so we can have a common bond.

I also have a problem with being "something American"

I am of Scottish/Irish blood, I am not Irish American or Scottish American, I am a proud AMERICAN!

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I'll make this my last post on this topic. We all don't mind helping people that help themselves but I draw the line when "helping" turns into doing.

I am a pretty handy person and can do about any project. I have a sister & brother in law that ask for my help on projects like roofing and such. I found out on the first and only project that they watch while I do the work. Too lazy or whatever to even get on the roof and lay shingles. I help, teach and bring all the tools needed to do the job but I too have work to do on my own place.

I view this as the same as the lazy person wanting state assistance rather than helping themselves. As Franz said some of the immigrants from years ago would rather starve than ask for assistance. Our poor and unemployed in this country are also the most overweight of any nation. A steady diet of Coke, potato chips and Jerry Springer....

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Dmac42,

I see the offering of important information in other languages as the welcoming mat to others into our culture. I don't see it as a barrier to them learning our culture. I see it as admitting that their culture was important too.

I don't believe we have to worry about ________American causing problems between our citizens. It's a human nature thing to want to be different but the same. I can take you into the local coffee shop and you will hear the most vehement arguments from Ford Americans against Chevy Americans. And both of them will jump on a Dodge American like it's poor trash unless of course it has a Cummins which means it's got at least one redeeming quality.

Now I'm a Chevy American of the sub culture know as big block. I don't like Fords and I'd have a Dodge if it didn't have to have that silly goat head on it's body and a gas motor under the hood.

I see our need for distinction on race as just another aspect of our search for individuality. I do believe besides sexual content the biggest use of the internet is geneaology, right?

I look at being American like men look at friendships versus the way women do. You ask a woman about a best friend and you're going to hear about something you would only consider with a spouse. You ask a man and it's all about when the chips are down.

With men the friendship thing is all about those who are willing to step in and help out when there's a need. Even it's just something simple like a silly six pack offering resistance against consumption.

I think being American is a lot less about what you say and more about what you do. I wouldn't put a flag up right now on a bet. It's not about my lack of patriotism. It's just that so many of those waving the flag right now never have voted, went to a city council meeting, lent a hand to the city, or considered military service.

Fewer things turn my stomach quicker than seeing a person wearing a World Trade Center Tragedy t shirt with a flag in their front yard all tattered and worn, put up on a whim and maintained with the same dedication.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

What exactly is a "Mexican" anyway. I think it odd that in the USA where everyone is from everywhere that we think all Mexicans just sprung up in Mexico like native weeds. Really now, they are a very eclectic people. Many have native (Indian) roots and many have Europeon roots and various combinations. Since last I checked, Spain and Portugal and Italy are part of Europe and their native stocks were caucasion like it or not then most so called latinos are possibly whiter than me cuz I am sure somewhere along the line my geneology may have become confused. I have a friend, born in Mexico, several generations I imagine, he has blonde hair and blue eyes, his wife, a lovely educated woman who speaks several languages, has jet black hair and green eyes--they are Latino. All these classifications of people are tiring. J

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I had a (caucasian) friend who was born in South Africa. When his parents returned to the States and he started looking for a job he would check the "African-American" box on job applications. This caused more than a little agravation for HR managers trying to fill quotas. I for one like to check the "Native American' box seeing as I was born and raised here.

Isn't it interesting that those who worked so hard to end the seperate but equal laws now strive to seperate everyone into ethnic groups. Why should the question of race even be on job or credit applications anyway? Maybe it should be replaced with Citizen, Legal Alien or Other (PC for Illegal Alien).

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

PitbullMW, There were so few American before 9/11, sometimes it makes me sick. We have a wonderful chance in life, being American. We have the chance to do whatever we want to with our lives. We have the chance to stand around, and blame someone else for our troubles, or we can work to make something of ourselves. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but I'm not doing so bad for myself. I work to get the things, that I want. As does my wife, and sometimes its not easy. This crap of putting race on a application, or anything else is outdated with the Civil War. I don't care about race if you are a hardworking person, darn it you can make something of yourself. That's my two cents, but really who cares. Kent
