What a thread this has turned into. If it weren't for our elected officials, judges, senators, congress... would we even be discussing this ? Some good points come up, like WVBILL and the money thing. Ever tried to use a 50 or 100 at a gas and go place? Most won't take them even if the change back is less than 20. Chuck52, remember all most every settlement payment made is done through "risk analysis" usually involving your insurance company. 8NTX, do you have to be a legal immigrant to pay rent? Not here on the east coast. And W-Harv, your stories and posts just make my mind wander around like I was hammering on a piece of steel!
Almost all of us here are on the same page. LEGAL immigration is a good thing. How do we get the politicians to get rid of our obligations to fund the UN, NATO, illegal immigration, peacekeeping missions (which do cost soldiers lives), etc.??? Suggestions appreciated.

Wrong. Even "native" Americans migrated here through the Baring (sic) Straits, at least that is what I was taught in school. Also, about a year ago I saw a story on ABC news that anthropologists had unearthed remains of a caucasian, probably European, male in the Northwest that predates so called native Americans. The problem is that the remains are on an Indian Reservation and they will not allow the site to be excavated.

The Egyptians were conquered by the Babylonians, the Babylonians by the Persians, the Persians by the Greeks and the Greeks by the Romans and so on and so on.

To paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt, "This is our country, we stole it fair and square." I for one have never suffered from "white guilt".

PitBull, I am in basic agreement with the theme of your comment. Even though I am part indian I get sick and tired of all the BS about the the primacy of "Native Americans" and their "oneness" with nature, instinctive ecologists my a$$. However, the land bridge thing is over sold.

Here in Oklahoma we have a state park named "Runestone." The "first" white settlers to find inscribed stones (written language) assumed it to be indian writing. The indians didn't have a clue who did it. Modern scolars have determined the writing to be truly ancient, appear in several places in this state and others, and actually be a form of ancient icelandic and other ancient writing. The particular stone for which the park is named is a land claim marker most likely Viking in origin. It is one of many "non-intuitive" samples of ancient writing found in the US. By non-intuitive, I mean contrary to popular myth, folklore, and or teaching. See the book, "In Plain Sight" written by a lady still living near Heavener, OK nearest semblance of civilization to the park.

The idea that the so called noble red man came only over the land bridge (Bering Strait) to populate this continent flys in the face of many defensible facts including DNA analysis. Take for example the Citizen Pottawatomie of Oklahoma who came here by way of several moves but are traceable to eastern Canada/Nova Scotia. They were noted for having green eyes and light hair. They do not have asian style slanted eyes, "indian" noses, big lips, or particularly prominent cheek bones. I met several before I realized they were in fact full blooded or nearly so tribal indians. Look like non descript european stock to my untrained eye. I had a long talk with the elected chairman of the tribe (they call their elected leader a chairman not chief). So at what point do immigrants from europe become native Americans (indians). Do viking descendants or mixed breed viking and xxx get to be indians or what? Gets complicated but one thing is for sure all the folks whose arrival predated Columbus didn't come from Asia via the Bearing Strait land bridge.

Regarding who did what to whom and why: I don't have white guilt regarding the "indians" and my indian part doesn't carry a grudge, my Irish part doesn't carry a grudge against the modern English for the atrocities commited against my forbearers and I hope the Italians don't mind what my close relatives did to the Romans in England/Scotland. I sure don't condone the Kit Carson raids, the "Trail of Tears" or the fate of the seventh Cav. I quote Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?"

Still, whoever is "in charge" of the country, at this moment in history (in theory all of us citizens, not residents, CITIZENS), is in the driver's seat for better or worse and can make the laws however they see fit and if it isn't fair to potential usurpers then too bad for them. If it makes it real hard to legally overthrow or modify our society easily then thats the way it is. Folks are free to stay home if they don't like it. They are free to try to change us but we are free to resist. Play my game, play by my rules. Try to change the rules or get too physical and we might do something to stop you. This isn't right or wrong, just the way it is.

This has been a most interesting thread to read. Very revealing. I forgot who said this but I offer the quote anyway, "Make people think that they are thinking and they will love you but really make them think and they will hate you."

patrickg: good post and well said. Do you remember the comedy bit by George Carland about Indians being the worst fighters ever? They started on the east coast and retreated to California, also they didn't use every part of the buffalo wisely. They used the hump as a door stop.

I once questioned my high school history teacher about the Vikings in North America and was told that they came but did not settle or colonize. This seams to fly in the face of other Viking conquests as far away as the Mediterranian. I've always believed that North America was settled at least in part by Vikings/Scandanavians.

Maybe those writings were from Mormans as they made their way to New York? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif (sorry a little local humor).

I got a headache about half way through this discussion but here is my take on the language issue.
By taking both sides of the language issue to their extremes, what would you have.

1. No common language. Every single person residing in the U.S. speaks a different language. No two people speak the same language. Can you imagine the chaos. We would not have a country. We wouldn't have anything.

2. Everyone in the U.S. speaks the same language. Everyone can communicate with every other person. I'm still trying to think of a problem with this one.

Pitbull, I like Carlan's humor but unfortunately was not aware of the bit to which you refer. A word of warning though, You should be careful in commenting to one of the "great unwashed" in a polysyllabic manner as they may get someone of their own ilk to translate for them and be really mad when they find out, perhaps erroneously, what you said.

Oh, I understood the reference alrighty but the most probable time of origin of the referenced inscriptions predates considerably the use of refractive correction (eye glasses, magic or otherwise) and are therefore over the time horizon and can not be causally or even casually related to that mythology (please no wormhole ripostes).

If you are at all intrigued by pre-Columbian historical research (albeit by supposed "non traditional" researchers not well accepted in the closed society of academic paleontology/archeology then try this URL for some interesting reading in some of Gloria Farnum's sample chapters.

Barry Fell wrote "America BC" which is an interesting read as well but you have to sift through it with an eye toward editing for reasonableness, his interpretations of some finds. Still the raw stuff AND much of his analysis is very thought provoking even though some of his interpretations may be a stretch. On balance, very interesting.

It isn't hard to find plenty of detractors as he departed from the mainstream sacred cows of academia and won their undying ire.

Please be more fair, especially as regards the coward sniping from the shadows as enjoining a battle of wits with an unarmed man is poor sportsmanship. Do you wonder if the "pitbullsforlunch" is some kind of indian thing, given that indians were well known dog eaters?
