I'm Looking To Build A Welding Cart

When you build your cart, you need to make sure you have enough air space around the welder for the cooling vents to work.

I've made a little more progress working an hour or so at a time. (Sorry, no more pics yet.) I cut out the side plates of the welder portion of the cart tonight. They are going to partially cover the cooling vents. I think I'm going to drill a series of holes in the side plates in front of the cooling vents in order to allow air flow.

Any recommendations on how many holes I can drill and still keep a little strength in the plate?

I got a generator welder with I think,50 ft leads,so most of times I weld with it,don't have to even move it.
I only got one 220 out side plug in,and its next to where my generator welder sets at,a 50 ft 220 cord would probably cost as much as 100 foot of lead??

Now if you had a shop, with a concrete floor and you had a mig welder on that cart, that would make sense to me,,but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

I need some help with a design question.

If I plan to use the top of the tool box as a welding table, do I need to electrically isolate the welder from the rest of the cart?

I made more progress tonight. I decided to electrically isolate the welder from the rest of the cart. The first pic is the cart at the beginning of the night with a 1/4" piece of rubber belting where the welder is going to go.

The second pic is the cart at the end of the night. Notice the holes I drilled to aid ventilation. Thanks Bronco.

I did one good weld all night. That's the third picture. I'm still working on finishing a bead without leaving a crater.

Well I don't know if it's incredible but yes it's my cart :) Just wanted to post it to show the advantages to building things yourself and one of the biggest advantages is being able to build it the way YOU want and need it.OH it's fun as well

Glad you liked the cart and thanks for that ;)

You crack me up. Hadn't seen the cart before. Beautiful job...as always! I never cease to be amazed when I see your work.

Looks like you're off to a good start. If it ends up half as good as the house is doing, then I'd have to say that you'll have a great cart.

I still need to figure out something to hang the cord and the leads on. For now, I'm thinking I'll use a section of 2" pipe or bigger if I can find a scrap. I only need a few inches for each side.

I realized these pictures are not the best with all the clutter in the background and all. Hopefully you can still get an idea what the cart is like.

Farmer, looks like you're coming right along with the cart. Just an observation but are your rear wheels rated to carry the weight of the welder. I don't know what your welder weighs but I had a situation once where I bought too light of a wheel and as it (smoker) sat it would create flat spots on my wheels. I had to go up in wheel rating.

I hope so. These are wheels I've had around for a while. I think I got them at the Army Surplus Store. They have steel inners and roller bearings. I figured that because they had the roller bearings they were a little stronger that most that size.

Also, I think I figured out what I'm going to do for my cord hangers... Wheels. I have a few sets of old lawn mower, wheel barrow, or child's wagon wheels. I'll have to see which are wide enough. I'll remove the tire and weld the wheel to the side of the cart. That should work great without a lot of fabrication.

Great! They'll probably work. I was just wondering. Great idea on the cord hangers. If I'd had some like you've got I'd done the same thing. Very easy and quick. Looking forward to the next series of pics.
