After reading Andy's tread on a container of Jinma's being held by Customs I wonder what frequency of "problems" with importation actually is. More specifically I'd like to reach out to individuals who have dealt direct with China and imported a single tractor for their personal use. I'm considering going this route and would appreciate hearing success stories and/or nightmares.

Here's a Jinma 220 on Ebay for $3,250.

Already imported, new, fully assembled. Located in Missouri.

Link to Jinma on Ebay

I don't see how you could import one and save anything off that price.

Anthony,

I did this, a few years ago. No real horror stories, just allot of anxious moments. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Customs is now much tighter, and many are being inspected. Given what it costs for a Jinma these days, don't think I would go through the pain again.

A few things to keep in mind:
- Single purchases get shipped loose frieght, which will get allot more handling. The chance of damage is much higher, and you stand a good chance of losing some parts. Most of the damage will be found after you unpack, not at the pick-up warehouse. Many times shipping damage effects a part that is not commonly stocked as a wear item part. ie, you might be waiting awhile for a replacement. Also if you are not a competent welder, may want to plan on finding one.

- While major issues, are generally rare, be prepared (mentally) if you do have one. Ie major engine or drivetrain issue. These will take a while to resolve and will require you to do all the mechanical work, be it tear down engine or split tractor.

- Depending on who is doing the paperwork, and who you are dealing with in China, and how lucky you are getting through customs, be prepared for some form of paperwork issue that will cause some additional warehouse fees. Could be a real pain, if you are driving hours to make the pick-up. Many times they don't find the issue until you are there for pick-up. This happened to me, and luckly it just turned into a few hour delay, vs renting another truck and coming back a different day.

- There are usually some sort of "surprise" with each import. The factory might have made a change or factory issue. This will impact the single tractor importer, more than the container or large importer. When I received mine, I had two front fel mounts for the same side, not one for left and one for right. I was able to find someone with the opposite problem and do a switch. Otherwise it was a cut and weld solution.

Can it be done? Yes
Can it be a pain? Plan on it
Can it save money? Maybe a little, but may cost you more

I saw one of your other posts, that you are looking to import a Kama, not a Jinma. I am not sure, if that will be any different or not. You will have less of a selection to get stateside parts (ie emergency parts that you are not willing to wait from china). While Chip and others are probably well stocked, it will not be comparable to all the sources of Jinma parts. Your tech info will be limited to Chip, Greg, and a few others, as that brand gains acceptance in the USA. The good news is that they are very active on the boards, and will probably be able to help.

I just wanted to say again, I agree with JohnS 100%

the problems that can come NOW compaired to even 2 years ago are much higher and in regards to some other recent postings about even dealers are starting to have some problems with importing tractors... It is far less chancy to BUY from a dealer now than it is a real $ saver over self importing. If you are looking to do it more for the KNOLAGE gained then you still can but the real savings are not so big anymore as the recent influx of FarmPros as well as long time importers such as Nortrac or Bolton makes self importing only a small % of savings and you can get much better after sales help if you have a good standing dealer such as graham @ bolton or any number of dealers listed on JohnS's web site or on NYCTOA or CTOA sites... (personally nave not bought anything from graham or anyone else that is active any longer but have communicated with many a dealer looking for info and such.)

anyhow if you look REALLY at the costs involved (many of them are hidden) when you look at importing one (or one container full) the stateside dealer costs are not bad, best way to SAVE$ is to go with a CRATE purchace and assemble it you're self. (some hidden costs can be port fee's, shippingfee's, fuel surcharges, dock fee's and so on...) I got a container full 3 yrs back and decided to buy inconjunction with a states side dealer start up... I would do it again but if I was only getting ONE I would simply call one or two of the dealers listed and get some prices... I'm sure you can get them sent in the color and options you want and probably be able to get one from STOCK right now at a near cost as winter sales of tractors are very slow.

I've taken the plunge, but not very happy at the moment.
Paid Hubie Export half up front. 68 days later I'm still waiting for a JM284 that they told me would arrive in 45 - 55 days.

English is not a strong point with their sales staff!

Dear Andy Spain,

1. It's Hubei, Not Hubie !!!

2. Generally they need 30 days to arrange the production, & 45~55 days for shipping & customs clearing.

3. Maybe now is the busiest season, so the date of production will be longer !!!

4. As my known, another Chinese Benye tractor plant does not accept new export purchase order in October because they are fully engaged in China dometic tractor orders production now.

5. Please wait patiently. But you may be careful that you'd better receive your tractor & clear the customs before Jan 1st 2005, to avoid the possible further EPA trouble in the new year.

Andy,
Have you heard of something new that will affect arrivals after January import date?

There are several posts on this subject and delays aren't uncommon. As the previous and other posts suggest you can encounter many problems when importing.
