This time, I make it 3/4 of the way up, and then lose traction at the steepest point. The L-39 starts skidding backwards as wheels continue spinning forwards. YIKES!!! I manage to keep it more or less straight on the hill with the steering wheel, and jam the shuttle into reverse, which slows the descent and averts disaster.

That flashes me back to what happend to me. I too have R4's and they fall short in the traction department when it comes to snow removal on my long, steep gravel road. I had to drop the FEL, and rear blade to slow backwards ride down...I have been pleased with the tire's performance on other surface conditions but for winter operations, on my road, they won't cut it.

To keep me and my tractor in one piece this winter I put these on..cuts down on the YIKES!! factor.

mtg65, that is an excellent solution to running on ice or slippery snow with R4's. Those chains look awesome. Where did you get those chains?

Otus,

Weight!

My tractor is just small, and I've got some pretty aggressive Ag bar tires (R1), but I saw a huge difference in traction when pushing snow after I added about 90 pounds of weight to each side.

Maybe you've already got the weight. With your conditions you'll probably need additional help, i.e. chains, sand, technique, etc.; but the weight on the rear tires will help any of those solutions make a bigger difference.

Anybody ever heard of "Liquid Tire Chain" spray can of propellant and pine tree resin. Works pretty well while its there. Comes off when you run on dry ground. No damage to concrete, works as needed, easy to apply, cheap solution to an occasional problem.

Google it.

They are Norse/telesfsdal brand, I believe they are manufactured Norway. I purchased them at a local dealership here but I'm sure if you contact your dealer they may be able to get them. If not, do a search on Norse chains and see where the closest distributer might be..they do work very well!
