I have a really heavy duty set of Hydraulic Disc Harrows that are about 7 foot wide, I also have a set of smaller 3pt hitch offset disc harrows, but they aren't nearly as beefy and don't cut nearly as deep as the hydraulic set.

I am trying to find if anyone knows of a manufacturer that makes a set of 3-point hitch discs around 6-8ft wide that turn/dig as well as a heavy set of hydraulic discs??? I have been told that the Brushmaster line of discs made by Amco/Wildlife Specialty will do it, however they are about $7k new, and I don't think you can find them used very often. Our soil is often hard clay, and sometimes we have to cut into an established fescue field.

If anyone knows of some, please let me know if you have seen some used for sale around upstate SC.

Thank you for your help!! :)

In Fastline this month Lasseter Equ. in Lyons, Ga shows a 3pt Athens 97 (8'4") for $3500.
The 97 means 97 lbs per disc. Greensouth in Thomasville as a 97 for the same price but w/ scrapers.

Good luck,
Kevin

Howse makes some HD 3pt harrows(HT series). They have 20" blades and you can get a 7 1/2' or 9'. They'll save you lots of $$$ compared to the Athens.

I'm looking for a front end loader for a JD 6403 with cab. Also, a heavy duty 3 pt. hitch offset disc from 7'6'' to 8'6".

disk on trailer.jpgDisk brand and serial.jpgIf you want a disc that is heavy and deep cutting, get one that is trailer pull type with hydraulic operated wheels. Put water in the tires on the disc for extra weight. That is what we used to do with the big tandem disc that were so heavy that they needed 4 tires to hold them up and then we put double acting cylinder on the tire lift and filled those big 10:00x16 duals with water and then sucked them off the ground when discing. Get a disk with 3/16" thick or 1/4" thick blades and you will have a cutting machine. I don't know of anyone that makes narrow disc that heavy though.
Mine is about as heavy a frame disc as you can get for a 3PH made by J BAR and the blades are only 1/8" thick and has two sections of railroad on it for extra weight.
Also get one that has adjustable set to the gangs, some are fixed into one position. NOTE the holes in the center frame where each gang is fastened which allows you to take some set out so it is such aggressive cutting if you want to just use it for covering seeded pastures and other tillage where you don't want to disturb the soil so much.

AMCO is a good heavy duty disk I used to have a 6' or 6 1/2' pull type with large diameter heavy spools in the 1970's wish I could find another one like it. Hope you can find one for your needs.

Amco is a great disc. I don't have stock or anything but they are local, built in the gateway to the delta. 2nd the howse, have one( see avatar) love it. But they are another MS company. I'm biased.
Land pride makes a good one also.

Missisippi is a popular location for disk manufacturers there are several top brands made in the state. Tuffline is another example.

I think he was inquiring about a 3pt offset disc harrow. As for 3pt finishing harrows, there are many nice ones on the market. The Monroe Tufline offset harrows are nice but can get pretty pricey. Everything Attachments has some pretty nice heavy finishing harrows if you're shopping new.

I think the Athens with the fold up feature would do some aggressive work. Ken Sweet

When I see harrow I think light disk, when I see offset I think heavy disk. Offset disk harrow sounds confusing to me but what do I know. There are several 3ph offset disks out there but I would much prefer a wheel disk.

I know that this isn't a 3pt disk, but I always like to peek at this set every once in awhile.

Probably one of the main determining factors in how deep a disc will cut is machine weight per blade. (Dividing machine weight by the total number of blades) Also, smaller diameter blades will cut better than large diameter simply because the blade acts as a wheel albeit a thin wheel. The smaller "wheel" has less floatation. Groundspeed is another determining factor; a slower speed will let the blades penetrate deeper.
Another consideration, which may not be as important on the smaller discs, is how good of a job of leveling the soil the machine does. Larger discs will have feathering blades at the outside end of each gang which tend to prevent deep furrows and/or ridges between machine passes in the field. The feathering discs normally consist of progressively smaller (an inch or two in diameter) blades at the outside ends of the gangs and sometimes the last blade will be a triangular shape to prevent leaving a continuous furrow that may cause soil erosion. Another important factor for doing a good discing job is the leveling of the disc frame front to rear which can be adjusted with the top link on the 3PH. Discs with wheels for transport and depth control normally have a self-leveling mechanism that coordinates the tongue angle with the lift mechanism for keep the disc level at any operating depth as well as in transport mode. It is very important than this self-leveling be initially adjusted for the tractor drawbar height as well as field operating conditions. Running a tandem disc with the rear gangs too low will tend to leave a ridge of soil behind the center of the disc while running with the rear gangs too high will result in the front gangs throwing up nasty ridges on each side of the machine which the rear gangs are not able to level out.
It is important when using a disc with wheels for controlling cutting depth to keep at least a little machine weight on the wheels in the field to assure consistent cutting depth. Raising the wheels clear of the ground will allow uneven penetration of the disc due to weight distribution. Some heavy duty construction type discs, on the other hand, are designed to run with the wheels raised above ground which adds cutting weight as mentioned above.

That's some good explaining. I did some today in two fields. My disc does not have any feather to fill furrow.
