Hi Everyone,

I have been out here reading and obsorbing all this good info. Now I have the opportunity to buy a International 125 crawler loader with a 4 way blade/bucket. The owner is a neighbor of mine and bought the crawler new in 1980. It has about 2950 hours on it. It has been well maintained but used at the same time. He is asking 10.5K for it.

Questions, What should I look for? I have no expierence with this kind of equipment. I intend to use it to grade roads and engage the earth around my property. The ground in my area is either hard red clay or sandstone shale.

I also have a Kubota M9000 with a backhoe but it will not hardly dent the sandstone shale, however the backhoe does a fair job of it.

Thanks

Well, you probably want to go over to the Red Power Forum in the IH Construction Section and ask there. They are the IH experts and can tell you what to look for in the undercarriage and other areas of concern. I also believe that $10.5k is way too much for that piece of equipment.

My IH TD6 with Drott loader and 4n1 bucket is shown.

Look at the sprockets and see if they are pointed, the track pins should be round. Ask him if he's done any track work, he's more then likely had to dig in the same stuff as your tractor and it does weigh a LOT more it also would be wearing the tracks more then in a softer dirt.

Thanks guys.

He said he has not done any track work, however he said it is about time to rotate the track link pins 180°. I do not know what it takes to do this???

If it matters in the value, it does have the two large hydraculic rippers in the rear.

Also he lives right across the highway from me, so their would not be any shipping charges involed.

Is 2950 hours a lot of hours for a 27 year old piece of equipment??
He claims it is about half way through its life before you have to start to put some serious cash into repairs. Is this true?? I would probably not put another 3K hours in the rest of my like time. Where I am at is a little remote and I get tired of contractors not showing up when they tell me, so this is the main reason I would like to have it around.

Again thanks for your replies.

With 3000 hours it is going to need the sprockets replaced now or soon. You also need to look at all the rollers bottom and top. Also you need to check the wear on the front idler. To turn the pins and bushings You will have to remove the trracks and take them to a machinery company that has a track press so that they can be turned. It's not something you can do yourself. 3000 hours isn't many hours for that age machine, but it is at a point that the undercarriage is going to take some money to get into good condition. A rough guess would be about 3 to 5 thousand to replace the need parts. I would think that if you could get it for 7 or 8 thousand it might be a better number for it. Although just about any machine the tracks turn on will bring 10k around here. Also remember that he paid way less than 10 thousand 27 years ago for that machine new.

Hi dirtworkseqip,

Thanks for the reply.

He bought it new in California in 1980, said he paid
38K for it.

Any idea how much the tracks weigh????

Thanks Again.

The guys over on Red Power can answer that. They live, breathe and die IH equipment.

I don't know what a pin & bushing turn would cost on that machine, but if you are going to keep it for a long time and do a lot of work with it it might pay you to just run out the undercarriage thats on it now and then redo the whole thing at a later date. Then you can put new chains, bottom & top rollers, drive sprockets and front idles on all in one shot.By then the trackshoes may even need replaced. Sorry I don't have any idea of what the tracks would weight on that machine.
