Iron Hill Shed

Hey Bo-Man,

Thanks for putting all this up. It's an inspiration for me as I start planning my barn (also a new home for a little Bota) that's going to use poles from felled trees off the place.

Question: I had always thought that peeling the poles would be key, but perhaps not? I've got a lot of Alder that are the right size and the bark is pretty smooth, so if it wont be in the way should I just leave it? That would save a lot of time with a drawknife!

Also it looks like you notched the poles where you attached the stringers? I'm thinking just enough to have a flat surface to bolt to?

I've done some building but never with raw poles. Looking forward to it!

Thanks
Andy

As for the debarking. Some are, some are not. From folks I've talked with around here it's a matter of opinion. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still not strip them (ask me again in 15-20 years on my opinion). All are coated with the foundation sealer.

The notches. It's the get the stringers plum. The bottom stringer is treated 2X6, so it's 1 3/4" and the middle/top are real 2" width. Some are notched to make a nice smooth plum wall, other wise the walls would be crooked since the poles are not the same at the top/bottom. Oh, I plummed the poles best I could to the outside wall, and the ones where you drive thru, but it's still a log in a hole!

Still working to finish, between Christmas and nobody buying houses I haven't the extra dollars to finish the rest of the roof (3 deals feel or still waiting on the banks to okay loans for some hard working people).

Hopefully I'll get more siding up on Sunday. Big day Saturday showing a lot of homes.

More pics to come soon.

Snow's melted. Mud up to my butt, but I did manage to get the back of the shed's roof done. I'd had part of the front done but they were out of stock of 12' material. Maybe next weekend. With the back side covered there's some things out of the rain at least now.

Pics a coming when there's some front roofing done.

Keep on plugging away!!!!

It's like anything else, one step at a time, and then you're done with it and planning the next project.

Another good day of shed building. The walls on each end are covered, the east side still needs some of the top boards. I cut those from the scrap and that pile is tiny (using some as a table top on my saw horses). Also I got the back side is about 1/3 finished. Things are starting to get in the dry now.

Picked up all the stuff covered up (generator, chipper, POS pressure washer, etc.,) all in a dry corner.

They should have 12' metal in this week and knock on wood (or metal) if it don't rain a lot I may get the roof complete this week...depending upon taxes I gotta pay tomorrow...the money may run out.

Oh, it's a getting there!

Another good day of work. No roof work since the folks didn't get the 12' material as they expected and they wouldn't sell me the 14' stuff at the 12' price.

All three sides are all boarded up except 18". I need to trim a post and the chainsaw went KA-BLEWEY a while back.... It'll be an easy task to finish.

Started on a 8'x8' workshop in one corner of the shed. Got the joist down and will throw down some plywood as floor and OSB walls. I'll add a workbench there too.

I'm one tired/sore BO-DADDY right about now. Did a lot of clean up 'round the shed too.

Whew, it's been a long tough winter but I'm starting to see a light, and some green (as in dollars and grass) in the future. Actually the grass is greening up 'round here.

Got a few things that should start wrapping up in the real estate world and get me a few paydays, with on ear marked to pretty much get the Iron Hill Shed "mostly" done. I'll never be done, and I'm no sure exactly when the electric will be ready....but DRY is good!

Part of the paydays will be, or are supposed to be, working a turn-around at the refinery doing a fire watch, hole watch or bottle watch. It pays pretty good for a short period of time but we do what we have to do.
