Is my loader is piece of crap?

My friend Dawn just picked up a 990 and I had some time to play with it. First of all it's the low end of the 4000 line but that's not the whole story. It's a well build tractor with bare minimums is more like it. No frills, syncro (pita), etc. but the engine is smooth and the tractor does what its supposed to. She has the 300cx loader on it. Sure it's not a 4720 but it's still a good tractor.

It's actually not even part of the current 4xxx series tractors, just as the 3005 isn't part of the current 3xxx series machines. Neither are "low end" machines...just very simple and robust designs (like 2010 versions of the Ford 8N tractors). Both 4005 and 3005 model designations are strictly for marketing purposes.
Both the 4005 (990) and the 3005 (790) predate the current models 3xxx and 4xxx by a decade. The 990 and 790 roots go back even further.
Both good, solid old (1980's or older) designs. Pretty much bulletproof if you maintain them and use a degree of common sense.

That's what I have too. Like I said earlier, I believe the pins are of a softer material so they wear before the bushings do. Thanks for checking!

I so agree with that. I've had mine doing things that would blow your mind, so I can't complain. Roy, Am I misunderstanding you? The 990 is actually reassigned as the 4005 these days, and has not been changed in any way that I'm aware of. According to the brochure I have, on the 4000 series, the 990/4005, has the exact same engine options, hydraulic pump flow and weight etc. Is your first sentence a typo or am I not understanding you clearly?

He's telling it like it is. The current 3005/4005 are the same tractor as they were back in the eighties when they were numbered 770 & 970. Except they now have larger engines. The 770 was 24hp and the 970 was 35hp. As Roy said, they really date back to the 750 & 950 of the seventies. Why are they still made today, because they are simple easy to use and as bullitt proof as ****. Plus they are very good sellers and I'm sure very profitable for JD. My 670 was a very good tractor. Wish I never traded it.

Well, no............... but that wouldn't mean its not an upgrade !

Ahhh. I see. No doubt about it, the non synchro is a bit third world, but the thing is bullet proof as you say. I had the forks out today, moving some loaded pallets. Even if the loader was a piece of crap, which it isn't, using the forks makes it worthwhile! Best 500 bucks I ever spent!
